I'm guessing that he's imitating the ambulance sound, it sounds alot like it. Could their be another reason for this? My minituare schnauzer always seems so sad after hearing an ambulance, its pretty cute.

Well, in the wild, dogs hear another dog, and start howling, too. Maybe it's the doggie approach to online communication.

It has nothing to do with hurting a dog's ears, that is an old wives tale. It doesn't hurt. Wolves communicate by scent and by sound. Howling is a part of communicating. Dogs hear a siren and think it is another dog howling and their instinct is to howl also to communicate their presence. Ever hear coyotes howling at night. Start with just one and then they are all doing it.

canines are "joiners" while it comes thingsdogs do,like sounding off. you will observe that continuously, in an area, not one, yet many canines howl simultaniously. that could be a "%." form of element. A siren, appears like a huge canines howling, and something, suitable on cue, desire to be heard too.

My old dog used to do the exact thing!! I could never figure it out. My mom thought that maybe the siren kinda hurt her ears. But then we thought maybe she was howling to kinda join in with the siren.
