or any other document that assured the board of elders or church leaders that you would endeavour to follow the tennets and uphold the teachings of their ministry?

Hi Kerilyn... actually not strange at all and fairly common. Even in the biggest denominations, members are "encouraged" to follow their catechism teachings, or interpretations of scriptural docterine. They might not be asked to sign something, but they are definately taught to follow it - sometimes with promise of consequence. My thought is that most people who belong to large denominational organizations are not even aware of it.

I joined my church by Baptism which is in and of itself a statement of faith. I didn't sign anything but there are three ways to join a baptist church, a letter from your former church stating you were baptized, being baptized at that church or by signing a statement of faith. I really don't see what the big deal is, its not a legally binding contract and if you don't do any of these things you can still attend our church you just cant be a member and vote on church business. All that being said nobody should sign or do anything that they do not feel lead to do or that they feel is wrong for them.

Actually, many of the New Testament letters were not only God inspired, but also served to let members of the Body know that the person bringing the letter was coming into their midst as a fellow Christian known by Paul, or one of the other recognized servants and teachers of the faith. I know of a few churches that will ask for a letter from your former church, but I will not name them to open them to ridicule. I have never signed anything, but certain behavior will disqualify you from leading a ministry in many churches I have attended. Leaders should be called to a higher standard.

i'm sorry you encountered that. The final prepared hierarchical church we attended did require us to sign a assertion of religion. For us it exchange into form of the different of your situation. I informed the pastor what I disagreed with and he mentioned, "Oh no person takes that section heavily any further. this is nice -- you may pass forward and sign it. It does not truly recommend you consider each little thing." even though it DID recommend that. perchance to no longer him, yet truly it meant that to the human beings who wrote it. We persisted to attend yet chosen to no longer exchange into individuals. As for you, i individually think of you ought to withdraw your application for club and pass someplace else. Your relationship on your spouse is a lot greater considerable than growing to be to be a member of a particular church. yet of course i don't comprehend any further than what you have mentioned on your question, and doubtless this could be the incorrect ingredient which you will do. you will ought to offer it some theory and a few prayer -- try this mutually with your spouse, however. Make it sparkling that your first loyalty is to God and then to her -- this church does not discern in, a minimum of no longer at this ingredient. i'm uncertain why you choose a perfect club besides. i do no longer think of you will discover that interior the hot testomony (or the previous). edit: BTW, I meant to indicate that i'm a Trinitarian, yet i do no longer think of our Father is so recommend-lively that He'd condemn every person for an honest mistake in theology.

Ramjet, in the Wiccan Religion we do NOT have any "tenets" to uphold. I did a self-dedication to Goddess and God. As a part of that I pledged myself to love and serve THEM and ALL else that exists in the Universe. I pleded to seek out the Wisdom of God and Goddess in everything that I do. And I promised that I would uphold the universal law that I would Harm Nothing, for to do so would be to harm myself.

Ick!

Added: Other than an actual religious office _employment_ contract, you should not be asked to sign any such thing. If someone requires that, then run. Run hard, run fast, run silent, run deep, ... but RUN!
