anything can happen it seems from reports I travel a fair amt and havent notced anything missing But You sure are lucky it was flip flops and not something more expensive or irreplaceable. You were smart not to pack anything that you would sorely miss. Always think of that when packing Another option-if you are visting friends or family-mail a package to your destination ahead of time of some of your things so you can get more space for valuables in carry on luggage Less chance of lost things or delayed things as most of the time the problem is luggagae is lost for a few days rather than actual stealing.Or if you have time and money, pack little and go shopping for the new things you need anyway once getting there so at least only one way you have more things.Dont bring your best stuff, clothing etc.

Yes they can and they will, some of them anyway. I was told I had too much "bling" on last time I went through the airport, and being famously late as I always am, I left my gold bracelet, earrings and my chanel sunglasses in the bucket at the security checkpoint at Orlando International. They were never found. That's called a TSA employee took them.

It has been said to happen, and certain airports seem to be famous for it. Although, I have to say that I once forgot a pair of flip flops in the hotel. They are easy to miss. This is not to say you lost yours yourself. Nothing has ever been stolen from me personally at an aeroport, so all I know is hearsay.

One time when I arrived back in Europe from the USA I noticed that the lock on my case had been opened (but not broken) and replaced to a loop on the side of the case so someone had been snooping inside but nothing was actually taken. My friend had medication stolen on another flight.

Sadly, yes, it happens, that's why I try to pack my expensive items in a small carry on and take it on the plane.

possibly, but don't just single out TSA. it could be the cargo handlers, or the hotel chamber maid, bell hop, friends, family.
it could have been anyone who came in contact w/ your luggage.

Or maybe you forgot to pack them?
Its pretty unlikely to that would steal. They are under heavy supervision themselves. But it is possible I suppose.
