Bud Light, Coors Light, Busch Light -- these are the crappiest, most tasteless beers on the market. None of these even taste like "beer."

Coors Light tastes like cold water with a hint of aluminum can and Busch Light tastes like just plain old cold tap water. No flavor whatsoever.

And yet these beers dominate the U.S. market.

This is something I have pondered myself. The biggest reason is advertising. I would say that the overwhelming majority of advertising you see, specifically commercials, is for light beer. When was the last time you saw a commercial for Miller Genuine Draft as opposed to Miller Lite? Or Coors Original, as opposed to Coors Light? For most people, it is all about image. I know the big companies are working on increasing sales of their full flavor beers (Budweiser, Coors, and Miller Genuine).

I agree with you that these light beers are poor quality. I much prefer regular beer. All we can do is keep buying it, and spread the word. Hopefully this awful trend will end, or at least slow down!

Wow! Lotta beer snobs here. Does it really matter to anyone what a person drinks? Calories are probably the biggest reason they go light. The difference is more than 10 calories. Typical beer is 150 cals and typical light is 100.

Alot of European beer can go 200 calories. I know many of the homemade beers I made hit the high calorie mark pretty easy.

Price may play a big part also. I am sure I could get some very fine imported beers that would meet approval of some that have posted here but the cost is very high and if it is in our stores, it is typically "skunk" since no one buys expensive beer for everyday use if they are heavy beer drinkers. Most Europeans hate US beer and that's fine by me but it all comes out as piss in the end so does it really matter? Or does having high class piss mean something special?

I think most people drink light beer because they don't really like beer. They like the idea of drinking beer, but do not really enjoy the flavor of good beer. I personally drink light beer after I am already drunk so that I do not get absolutely incoherent. I can drink the watered down beer without getting drunker at an extremely rapid rate.

Because most people don't like beer and have never had REAL beer. So the more watered-down it is, and the less it tastes like beer, the easier it is to drink.

People are stupid if they drink light beer because of the calories. Instead of 120 calories per beer, they get 110?

It's the beer makers having the consumer pay for water under their name.

Apparently, there must be a lot more people that think it tastes better than you want to admit. We drink Milwaukee's Best Light here at home. Tastes fine to us....
