I don't know if this is your problem or not, but when my computer slowed way down, it was because I had a bunch of spyware on it. I went to spywaredetector.com and had it checked for free, it said I had a bunch (hundreds) of spyware on the computer. I paid the fee, $39.95??? and it cleaned it all off. Computer sped way up and hasn't had any problems since then. Spywaredetector scans the hard drive every day (you can schedule it when you want) and it keeps it clean -- I surf the web a lot and that is where all the spyware comes from, that program keeps my computer running well. Also, if you get a new computer, you can just download it onto new computer and register the new computer and you don't have to pay the fee again...I think it is a yearly fee, but very worth it.

first defrag several times

then download CCleaner
http://ccleaner.com

Install it, then at the cleaner tab check everything except the advanced stuff unless you are a very advanced user. I only use some of the advanced tabs. Go to applications and check every box.

Go to the Issues tab. Scan for issues and fix ALL of them. Do it several times.

Next, at the tools tab, click startup. Clean off all the programs you DON'T need.

Then go to the uninstall tab and uninstall programs you never use.

If you use a program only occasionally, invest in a 1-4 gig (depending on the amount of programs) and install them to the flash drive and delete the programs from your computer. That way you can use them when you want to, but it doesn't slow you down.

Your computer will be much faster, without spending a dime (unless you want to donate to CCleaner, but you don't have to)

This depend's on how much memory you have in your pc, when you first loaded it up with the operating system it was faster than a rocket. Then you went and putt all your programs and music and whatever elce and now it's slow again. This is why it's got slower when you boot your system up it searches everythin you have on their so it can take longer than normal to get into windows.

Long boot up is due to pre-installed programs on start-up.
Unfortunately, you won't see it on start-up menu!
Use a program like "winpatrol", (www.winpatrol.com).
On the start-up tab, you will see huge amount of pre-fetched programs. You can remove them ALL.
Why? Well, all programmers believe that if you buy their programs, you are going to use it everyday, so they want it ready to run quickly, and pre-load them. In fact, without pre-load, their program is only going to loose 1 or 2 seconds to load!
By removing all startup programs, I made a friend's PC boot in 11 seconds instead of well over 2 minutes.
The MSN messenger is also a great time consumer. Call it ONLY if you want it and are already connected to internet (you don't need it if you are off-line, do you???)
Finally, of course, spyware, and adware may be the cause of it, too..., but they are only called when on-line. Viruses is another matter: you have to clean them.
And your anti-virus (especially Norton) is another great time consumer! If you are careful with your machine, the A-V software only need to run WHEN YOU WANT IT.
(Norton will check your Word documents EVERYTIME before opening them, even if you NEVER go on-line! WHY???)

To see if it is spyware go here http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1 and download this free program. It's better and more up to date than the ones you pay for.
Also run msconfig and see how many program are loading at startup click the startup tab and uncheck any unnecessary programs that are loading.
