I think everyone has a different experience. For me it has a lot to do with not being raised christian. My mom was wiccan and believed that the earth is sacred. (She's still a hippy too. haha) This gave me the freedom to explore different beliefs and not feel I had to believe in god. It is actually a strange thing to me that so many people be live in something with such conviction. I mean I understand the need to believe in a god, but the fanatics freak me out.
I think people have made their christian god out to be a bigot and very closed minded. He seems vengeful and unchanging. I can't believe in a god that would give us the ability to change and yet would never change himself.

I've Been An Atheist Since I Was Twelve And I Didn't Make My Decision Based On Either Of Those. I've Always Been Fascinated By The Scientific Method And Developed A Particular Interest In The Big Bang Theory And Evolution. Many Christians Believe That These Theories Are Accurate And Still Maintain Their Faith On The Grounds That These Processes Were Just The Method Used By God To Create And Design The Universe. I Don't Buy That. The Development Of The Universe And The Diversity Of Life On Earth Can Be Explained By Science - It Was All Down To Chance. Secondly, I Observed From A Young Age That The World Is Filled With Suffering And Evil, Yet This So Called Omnipotent And Omniscient God Of Ours Decides Against Intervention. Those Are My Reasons For Having No Religious Faith. However, I Am An Open Minded Person And Fully Respect The Beliefs Of Theists Of All Religions. Everyone Is Entitled To Their Own Opinions.

There are many reason why people are atheists. I don't think people choose to be atheists, I think people discover that they ARE atheists. In fact when it comes to beliefs, I think we ultimately discover what we believe, rather than choose it. Our upbringing has a big infuence tho'.
There are "terrible" people across the religious spectrum. Do you think Christians become Christians because the realize how "terrible" atheists are ?

My parents baptized me, and then i got my 1st communion, and then i had to be confermed. So i had to go threw it all, and when i was about 14 i realized that its so stupid. They dont even give you a chance to think for your self before they start to brain wash you into believing in the christian faith.
But i broke out of that, and started thinking for my self, and i realized that it cant be real. Its not logical to believe that jesus rose from the dead, and the 10 plagues are a joke.
So yep.. now i'm atheist.
And it wasnt the christians that made me want to be an atheist. they were only a small part of it. Some christians arent as religious as others, so i can get along with them, but the ones that tell me to go to hell because i dont believe, can bite me.

Didn't ever 'become' an atheist. Most of the 'terrible' Christians are nowhere near me. I was lucky.

I became an Atheist because the Christians in my life didn't live the way Jesus would be proud of. Plus, I don't see any proof of the existence of God.

My becoming an atheist had nothing to do with anyone else, or the behavior of anyone else. I just didn't believe in gods anymore.

For me, it was realizing how hypocritical most Christians are that led me to think for myself.

When you speak of Jesus and what he said, the atheists start shaking and report you to their daddy Yahoo.

It's because we think for ourselves. We're too intelligent to act out of spite. That behavior is reserved for the Christian's god.
