It's not like they don't have the money.

Paying for all the missionaries yearly would cost around $300 Million. With their 5 Billion dollar annual income, they can afford it.

Millions of different missionaries and missions around the world? I don't think so.
According to LDS.ORG in 2006
There were 344 missions, and 53,164 full time missionaries. Nowhere close to the millions you claim.

I think it is a marvelous tradition that young men work and sacrifice to go on a mission. It is a part of physical and spiritual preparation to set aside for this adventure. If a family cannot afford it, there are others in the ward who willing accept to pay on behalf of an 'adopted' missionary.

BYU has one of the lowest tutuitions of any private university. Why isn't it free? Because then students wouldn't work as hard.

I have friends who are Mormons. To devout Mormons going on a 2 year mission is the ultimate expression of faith and sacrifice. Especially since devout LDS believe that their church is "the one true church" and that "all others churches are apostate (have false teachings)". I heard that the LDS church sometimes pay for expenses such as housing, transportation, etc. But the LDS church supplement payments are on a case by case basis.

Because it's an honor and a privilege, and sometimes a sacrifice. We do it because we want to.
We also voluntarily do humanitarian service, feed the hungry, do service, all because we love our fellow man.
The church has enough money because we voluntarily pay tithes and fast offerings too.

EDIT
Can I ask WHY IN THE WORLD do you care if it's not your $$ that's involved? The money goes to good things...so don't worry about it.

That money can be used for something else.

It is part of learning to sacrifice.
