I was wondering, because my puppy will get cat food and not dog food

I'm actually kind of torn on this question. My dog has been stealing my cats food since she was 10, she is now 17 and the only problems she has now are age associated. It didn't hurt her. But at the same time she was also getting dog food.

Dog food and cat food are set up differently for their different nutricional needs. What is good for the cat might not be good for the dog. You should give your puppy its proper food, that way he gets the proper nutrients he needs to grow up big and strong.

Its not good, but it won't kill him. Cat food normally has more fat than dog food and can cause diarrhea, as can any food changes. Your dog needs to eat his own food, especially since he's a puppy. Try putting the cat food up, cats can jump, dogs usually can't. Also you want to be sure you are feeding a high quality diet to your puppy, it should be a premium brand puppy food. do not feed it adult food until it is 1 yr old. If your pup is not getting the correct amount of nutrition it will substitute with other things, such as cat food and cat poop. Although some dogs just like to eat cat poop. Try putting the cat food up, if your dog stops eating, you may need to try a different kind of food, maybe your pup just doesn't like it. My pup loves Royal Canine, but will not touch Iams. Which are both good foods.

It's better than a cat eating dog food, but the cat food might honestly be too rich for the puppy and also it's more expensive than dog food. Cat food has more protein and taurine than dog food.

It won't hurt him to grab a bite every now and then, but not as a steady diet. It is too high in protein and cats have different nutritional requirments. He might get diarrhea from the rich food. Do not buy cat food for a puppy on purpose or you will eventually have a sick puppy!

My Pomeranian choose to eat cat food over dog food. She's almost 5 and has no problems.

If he eats it once I don't think it will make big difference (long time ago they use to eat from garbage and nobody was worried about it and they survive till today), in the end cats food mad of same ingredients just probably more rich in proteins.... but for long terms you should choose proper food type for your puppy :-)

Yes, actually it is OK---just NOT the other way around---Kitten eating the dog food. It isn't good for them plus it doesn't have all the nutrients in it that a cat needs.

no, this is not ok. each species (cat/dog) requires special nutrients. If your puppy is being finckey....then call the vet and ask advice...or even take him in for a check up...you vet can lead you to the proper food with the right amount of special nutrients for him
Thanks and good luck

It is too rich for them, will make their stomach feel unwell.

And more importantly, it gives them terrible (!!) gas. For the sake of your nose, DON'T let the dog eat the cat food. =)
