The month totally depends on the two of you.
Well, so does the planning for the wedding. You and your guy just have to figure out how much money the two of you have, and how much you can save for the wedding, since you'll be paying for it yourselves - and then you plan the number of guests and style of wedding you two can afford to have.

The month is entirely up to you and your groom. If you have NO SPECIAL month, I would check in your local areas to get an idea of what prices are for various things, in particular if you need to rent a place to hold the wedding and or reception. Some places charge more during some months compared to others. Also, it will give you an idea of availability of not only where, but other vendors as well, such as photographers, how busy florists, caterers are. and so on.
If you can afford it, use a wedding planner. If you decide to use a planner, meet at least 3. See if they have references available from not just vendors, but past clients as well. If a planner gets offended by you asking for references, run and find another. Also, if you use a planner, try to find one that does NOT take commissions from vendors. I use to be a wedding planner and NEVER took commissions from any vendors. Why is this important? A planner won't try to shove particular vendors down your throat to use.
If you can, give yourself ONE year to plan, 18 months would be better. Get an idea of how much you can afford for this wedding and how many people total, wedding party and guests pick out where you'll hold the reception(and wedding if at the same place) FIRST, and then go from there.

A Wedding Planner!! I wish I would've had the money to hire a planner but I didn't so I had to do it all myself with some help from my BM's and MOH. Best month, well that's entirely up to you! Every bride is different : )

Figure out exactly how much money is available, subtract the cost of essentials like dress, tux, preacher, place for ceremony and reception, flowers, photographer. Now take what is left and divide by the amt it will cost to cater the reception at the place you have chosen and you will know how many people you can invite. If it isn't enough people, start over, if it's too much left over, buy more stuff!!
