My cat is about to have kittens in two weeks and she is always going under my bed! I do not want her to have them under my bed because then I will not be able to check on her. I have made a dark, quiet, place for her. I just found her two days ago and she has not been taken care of, probably only 9month-1yr and looks like she has not eaten in weeks. I am worried that she will have problems during labor. Is is wrong to not allow her to go under my bed and cover up the opening?? ALSO, I have been told that some mothers birth the kittens, but do not take care of them(placenta, helping them to be breating, U cord. etc) Is this mother nature telling her they are not healthy or deformed? Or should I intervene??

1st off I commend you for taking in a pregnant cat, thats very nice and caring of you to do. There are a lot of resourses on the web about birthing and I urge you to read them. you may need to intervene in the birthing process, but you will need to know when and how to do it properly. I like this site http://www.showcatsonline.com/x/article_birthing_easy.htm

About the bed thing, your cat wants to go under the bed to give birth, cats are weird like that but she may get discouraged if you try to move her. I would recommend trying to block the bed and see if she will willingly go somewhere else. If she is stressed the pregnancy could be bad and sometimes the mom ends up killing her young. You will want to try and be present, especially since you just found her, you don't know her personality. If you haven't started already you need to be feeding the mom a high quality kitten food, and you will need to feed it to her until she's done breast feeding the kittens, which is after 8 wks. High quality foods are Iams, Science Diet, Royal Canine, and some natural foods. Do NOT buy crap food like Friskies, Meow Mix, or other filler foods like that. Check the website you will get so much information there you should be ready to go.

That is So Sad. I Really Support The ASPCA-I hope you don't tell me they aren't legit- I can't stand the thought of all these useless Deaths. I wish People would have their cats Neutered. I see so many roaming around Restaurants and I feel so sorry for them I want to Cry. I had a Kitty-this has been a long time ago and she had 6 kittens and Thank God I just placed an ad in our Local paper and checked these people out to make sure they were getting in Good Homes-Thankfully they all found Great Homes and I still go by and Visit some of them. It's a real problem I know-I couldn't do what you have to do-I believe my heart would absolutely Explode,or I would walk around crying all day. Thankfully mine were fixed when they were old enough and that helps so Much if people would do that. I wish I had a Great Idea for you.We have Pet-Day at PetSmart Every Sat and that's how they handle a lot of it here-but there are just too many. It's a Sad Situation.I know PetSmart doesn't allow anyone to adopt you really have to have a Good reputation and they will check you out here and they should.People that can't take care of Animals should not get any!

Whoa, slowed down. This must be your first experience with natural cat birth. Cats are animals, their instincts are much stronger than ours. I assume this is her first birth, so she might be a little freaked out.

Under the bed is not an ideal spot, i know, but cats will give birth where ever they damn well please whether you like it or not.

I would suggest making her comfortable there. Sealing the opening will only cause harm and freak her out even more. Best thing is to let her do things naturally. Set up her food and water dish close by, so she can eat easily. If she's heavy she's not going to want to travel very far. Instead of sealing the opening, set up a large box with blankets( that you don't mind throwing away).

Pregnant cats need to make a nest of some kind when they give birth, and it sounds like you're not giving her much options.

Give her the material she needs to nest and trust the cat instinct, they know what they're doing.

Unless you keep them confined to a particular area, cats will make a nest wherever they feel is safe. Most cats do just fine and instinctively know what to do when giving birth. Just keep an eye on things, but it's uncommon for them to have problems. Make sure she and the kittens start a deworming schedule when they are 2 weeks old as this can be a serious problem. You can safely use pyrantel pamoate every 1-2 weeks at dosage recommended on bottle, or OTC from the vet and they'll tell you how much to give.

Well you should really keep an eye on her if you think that she's going to have trouble but if she seems fine you should leave her because cats usually like to give birth in seclusion (alone) in the most unusual spots. but if she seems to be in distress or doesn't know what to do then u should put some of her toys or bedding in the spot you chose and get her used to it. its not wrong to be worried, especially if it's her first time and she's so young.

And if when the kittens come and are ignored it might be because it's too late to save them, or they just might not know what to do. If the kitten seems all right but the mothers not doing anything you should intervene. Hope this helps

It's perfectly fine to block the under-the-bed space so that she can not crawl under there. If you are worried abotu her, which it sounds liek you are, get her to the vet for an exam. If she has not eaten in two weeks, and she is pregnant, something is very wrong. Get to the vet. If this your first pet, look up a vet in the phone book or online. At this point, I would just pick *A* vet.. but once she has had the kittens, then do a little more research and pick a vet from that.

Overall, the type of advice that you are searching for should not be given by a typical person searching Yahoo Answers. These are questions that needs to be answered by someone who does this for a living, and has had schooling in such answers.

She may... She looking for safest place in your house that nobody can reach... It's mean she trust you most :-)... My cat had her babies once right on my bed!! Because in that time I had another cat who she didn't get along with and she find that safest place was in my bedroom :-)..
You should fill space under your bed with something (put books all around) if you don't want her to give a birth there. But bring that place you mad for her closer to your bedroom - maybe she worry less... Maybe there is another cats or dogs in you house, or some new people - all that will make her uncomfortable...
All cats I ever had take care of their babies just perfect - even first time - just leave them alone and let mother nature do it job...

Do you have a bathroom in the house that is not busy? If you can't get her to use the place you chose, force her into that bathroom and don't let others in. It is useful to watch and observe during birth in case of problems, but sometimes even new moms get through without trouble. The key is peace and quiet. Experienced moms sometimes ignore a baby for reasons like those you mentioned, but you don't know enough about her. Having a vet that you can call in an emergency will make a real difference. A vet can diagnose things you and I can't, can recommend best practices, and predict what the outcome is likely to be.

Block the bed with boxes. You are awesome to adopt a pregnant kitty. Get her a box, with top flaps that close and cut a small hole in the side, voila! A cat cave for birthing kittens. Your fears are legit but feed her well and they will be fine. Bbaies take what they need from mom so give her lots of yummies.

It would not be a very could idea to leave her under there. Be very gentle and take out from under your bed. Put her in a safe and dark place like the back of your closet or in the bathroom. feed her a little extra food and lots of water. if she doesn't have enough energy she will not be able to produce milk for her kittens. you should not worry about their well being. cats are very motherly and the know what to do. she is almost 2 years old and seems ol enough to care for them. just leave her alone and check on the kittens every day to make sure they are ok. i believe she will turn out ok and so will her kitties. just make sure you feed her good food.
