Most "sins" like abuse have the best chance of being overcome when the person has little or no understanding of the thoughts or actions.
The deeper a person gets into the abuse cycle the harder it is to pull them out. Psychologists note when a child starts with small things like tearing wings off insects ... they're on the path to being abusive. When we notice the child tearing off the wings, we can give the child support to modify their behavior for a lifetime. When it goes unnoticed, the child may (or may not) advance to hurting small animals like mice, rats, and hamsters ... then moving to larger animals like cats and dogs. These abusive actions are pleasurable for the child. So the more practice the child has at abusing the more action it takes to counter and re-condition this person.
When they become adult, they usually come to equilibrium of what pleasure they get from abusing others. This is very similar to when a smoker levels out at smoking a certain number of cigarettes. Deep inside the person knows the abuse is wrong, and deep inside they want to change. However, it takes a lot of self-discipline and desire to overcome and change this behavior.
Religiously, God is the one who gives the graces to overcome the behaviors ... however, we can still fall short and not rise to God's Will. I don't think we should give up on these people, but rather help them. When we cannot carry their cross to help them, get help from a professional who can help them. I believe we can all be saved from whatever our shortcomings are including: abuse, cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, adrenaline rushes, food, and any other thing we get trapped in.
