you can do so either in photoshop (which costs $$$$$) or in gimp (www.gimp.org), which is a free alternative to photoshop with many (not all) of the same features.
you open your image, create a layer that is transparent above your image then create your watermark on the layer. when you save the image, you flatten it, which makes it all into 1 layer again, thus making the watermark part of the image instead of a layer above the image.

Got Adobe Photoshop??

If you here you go!

Open an image.
Select the type tool.
In the options bar, click the color swatch and set the text color to 50% gray. (Use HSB values 0-0-50 or RGB values 128-128-128; both will produce the same result).
Choose a fairly heavy typeface like Arial Black.

Type the copyright symbol or any other text you want to use for a watermark.
Click the commit button to add your text.
Use the move tool to resize and position your text as desired. Double click to commit the changes.
In the layer styles palette choose Bevels from the pull down menu.
Click on Simple Inner to apply this effect.
Double click on the circled f symbol of the type layer in the layer palette to bring up the style settings dialog.
Adjust the bevel size and lighting angle until it's to your liking.
Click OK to apply the settings.
In the layers palette, change the blend mode for the type layer to Hard Light.
Tips:
If you'd like the watermark a little more visible, try a color value of 60% gray for the type (HSB value 0-0-60).
Resize the type at any time by pressing Ctrl-T (Windows) or Command-T (Mac). Hold the shift key and drag a corner handle. When you apply the transformation, the type will resize with no loss in quality.
You are not restricted to using only text for this effect. Try importing a logo or symbol to use as a watermark.
The Windows keyboard shortcut for the copyright (©) symbol is Alt+0169 (use the numeric keypad to type the numbers). The Mac shortcut is Option-G.
If you use the same watermark often, save it to a file that can be dropped into an image any time you need it. Remember, it's always editable!

a watermark is a signature, something that makes it official that this piece is yours only.

Unfortunately, there's no way of stopping people from stealing. However, if they are claiming they made the pics and animations themselves, that's illegal.

If you really want to make sure no one steals your work, then don't make it available to steal.

Sorry to hear your work is being stolen. That's why I don't put my photos online. Yes, they can put something on it to stop them... yet they can still be ripped off right online. The thing with water marks is that though it's good... here's the rub: There are apps to put them onto photos... and there are others to take them off! So my only recommendation would be to watermark them but do not put them online. Sorry. Do take care and do create... good luck.
