The failure of diplomacy, usually as a result of one side or both to discuss the issues civily.
In our previous war with Iraq (Saddam) in 2003, it was Saddams refusal to bow to international pressure for weapons inspections as he had agreed to in 1991.
In our current wars, this is Al-Qaedas desire to set up a caliphate (see the news article below) and their means to do so of killing unarmed civilians. We were content to ignore this until they decided to kill our civilians.
"In a wide-ranging video in which he primarily attacked the rulers of Saudi Arabia, Zawahiri also defended the Islamic State of Iraq, the umbrella group that he said was formed by al-Qaeda in Iraq, against critics who say it has been weakened and "lacks the necessary qualifications." He alleged that the group is getting closer to the goal of establishing an Islamic caliphate in the Middle East and urged Muslim youth to hurry to Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and the Palestinian territories to fight for their religion.
The speech is perhaps most significant for its admission that Sunni militants have grown divided over the usefulness of the alternative regime that the Islamic State of Iraq claims to offer." Washington Post
Bottom line is that evil does exist in the world today. It isn't likely to sit down at the negotiations table and war is the only option left.

War is just a grown-up's version of little kids fighting on a schoolyard playground. War is caused by people; simple human beings with emotions that run high. The big difference is that when some insane government leader or military junta takes power, they can 'up the ante' and use all their country's resources to satisfy their own personal agendas, greed, vendettas or egos.
George W. Bush and his family had a very personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein. Dick Cheney coveted all that OIL swimming underneath Iraq's sands. The giant U.S. military-industrial complex needed a new 'war' to boost its sagging profits. All of those personal, emotional issues came together to cause an unconstitutional, illegal, unjustifiable, immoral war against a sovereign nation that in no way threatened, provoked or attacked the United States - in direct violation of the UN Charter to which the United States of America is a signatory. -RKO- 07/07/07

The inability or unwillingness of two groups of people to talk. Or two worldviews that are so completely opposite that their is no middle ground. Nazi vs world. Radical Islam vs any secular state. Back in history radical Christianity was not much difference as heretics found out.
