I recently visited a showroom to enquire about a new VW Golf match. When I brought up the subject of discounts for cash and no trade in I was told it made little difference.
I'm sure that if i'd gone to do a deal there would have been something. Anyone with recent experience in these matters?

The dealer is going to be paid either my you, or by the finance company, so they really do not care that you are paying with your cash or borrowed money. If you finance through the dealer, they actually make more money than if you pay cash.

A trade in makes no difference. The car will be appraised for a dollar amount, and that is what you will get. They may play with the numbers to make it look better, but you will end up getting wholesale value for your trade!!

The only dealer who may give a discount for cash is a buy here pay here used car dealer. They are holding the financing, so they may be willing to cut a better deal and get paid in full!

Neil, VW no longer deals with the customers. The price is on the sticker. DEAL or NO DEAL. They do not really want you old car. Just give them the car for the price of the sales taxes. There is your deal less the trade in. Cash or credit the price is on the sticker.
