I come here because I believe that Plato had it right when he wrote the Apology. In that work, he has Socrates saying "The unexamined life is not worth living."

It seems to me that a large number of Christians and other religious folk tend to get comfortable with their beliefs, and stop questioning what they believe. Their life becomes based on a dogmatic creed that they follow blindly. I do not believe that everyone is like this, but there are enough that it is worth my time to try and get them to question things.

Likewise, as an atheist, I find it good to come here to try and test my own beliefs. To see if someone here can raise a question that can make me truly think. I have not come across anything earth-shattering yet, but who is to say that I will not find it someday.

This section of answers is here to discuss religion and spirituality. The atheists bring a different viewpoint to the table, that is occasionally a breath of fresh air, in a rather repetitive format.

I do not agree with the people who get mean, unless there is some meanness in the initial question.

These are just my reasons, take them or leave them.

Have a nice day.

When you go into the general Society & culture category these questions come up. I choose to believe that people ASKING a question directed to atheists wants to hear what atheists answer. Logical enough? No holy spirit involved.

The Internet, for good or bad, is a place where everyone can speak, everyone can be heard. Even if what they have to say isn't worth listening to. 8^<

If you are asking a question for Christians only--like 'Which of Jesus' parables has a special meaning to you?', then atheists should just butt out. The question wasn't meant for them.

But if you are sharing your opinion with the world at large, for example 'This is why I'm a Christian and why you should be one too!', then opposing views are allowed. Why not?

I think a lot of people that are called 'atheists' are not really that at all. They're just people who don't share your views. A lot of them believe in God but just believe different things about him. I would classify myself as 'agnostic'. I believe in God but I don't think people know as much about him as they think.

A lot of atheists feel that they're being oppressed by Christians, just as many Christians feel oppressed by atheists. If you say things meant to be provocative--like that the US is a Christian country, our founding fathers were the equivalent of modern-day fundamentalists, and our system of law should be based on the Ten Commandments, and -our- religion should be taught in public schools, then you can expect to get some squeals of pain from people who don't agree with you. Even non-Christians are entitled to their opinions.

I've even seen questions here deliberately taunting non-Christians. "Hey, Atheists, what are you gonna do when you die and go to hell, huh?" Stuff like that. Do you really expect no atheists are going to check in and disagree with that? 8^)

Some people seem to forget that this is the "Religion AND SPIRITUALITY" section.

Many Atheists have spiritual beliefs that do not include a God/s. Also they may wish to learn about others beliefs.

Three things must be remembered there are many religions other than Christianity, there are many people who believe in God that are not Christian and there are many people who simply wish to learn about others beliefs regardless of their own.

Go to an atheist web site, there are religious folk everywhere. they are thee for good debate. I assume most of us are here for a similar reason. Also for me at least while I can not imagine a scenario where it would change my lack of belief, I am interested in seeing why other people believe, as the concept is unimaginable to me.

Greetings,

Many of them are here because they're ignorant and can't think for themselves in a rational manner. Most of the people on here are young folk (under 40 years of age).....they're a byproduct of the hippie generation of the 1960's where a culture of "down with authority and down with morality" was created. Most of the university teachers today, the court judges, the elder people in power ARE the original hippie generation. considering that the hippie culture started in the late 1960s, young impressionable youth (between 16 and 35 years old) got into the whole notion of "down with everything and up with sex, drugs and hippie hallucinogenic music". these people now are hovering around 60 years of age and in power of senior positions. The hippie's children's children are the ones today that are into the "pimping/rap/hiphop/rave" culture", "friends with benefits", "atheist", "abortion is cool because my horniness is more important", "me me me/buy buy buy", selfish, "mariage is for losers", "political correctness and science are my only religions" kinds of people. These people live their lives in the way they have been programmed/brainwashed in the schools and media. They can't think for themselves on their own and need to be spoonfed by useless hacks of a hedonistic bygone era that failed and continues to fail because it isn't rooted in time-proven successful and moral practices. They think that by removing all things relating to God or religious-based teachings they feel they are creating a "utopia". So by breaking down anything deemed good and proper that anyone stands for, they hope to remove all things that cause "friction" (in their mind) between all humans. So in effect, removing all of morality so that everyone feels good about all actions without anyone being "discriminated against". It's all a lie.

Please check out this cool Youtube video for the most excellent speech I have ever heard about "How Modern Liberals Think". It's about how liberal EXTREMISM is destroying our society........he talks about the war in Iraq quite a bit at the beginning but the rest of the speech is monumental in explaining why conservativism and anything considered morally sound in priniciple is being dismantled by the liberal extremists (atheists, lobby groups and activists) and how the new religion of the western world has become political correctness.

Check it out! :)

Atheists who give opinions about religion do so for the same reasons as religious people who give opinions about religions.

If I am not suffering from AIDS, am I not allowed to give an opinion about it? If I am not black, am I not allowed to give an opinion about race relations or civil rights?

I don't like the effect organized religion is having on the society and culture in the U.S, and I hope to influence at least some moderate Christians to be more supporting of the separate of church & state.

Why spend so much time arguing about something you don't believe in? Don't know - and they have yet to fully explain it themselves.

A lot of times I see them fishing for converts. Other times I see them just bashing believers of whatever path to help fuel their anger problems. A small select few actually want to have an intelligent discussion about religion because they are truly interested into why some believe and how they maintain those beliefs.

I have never heard this question before! Very original!

There is more to religion and spirituality than your particular god. And, since religion affects my life, I have a right to discuss it. Why are you wasting 5 points asking this question which is asked countless times a day? Perhaps it is you looking for the wake-up call? :)
