how do I repair stained hardwood floors?

we recently moved into a new home that has hardwood floors. I would love to keep the hardwood floors instead of laying down carpet, the person who lived here before said that the old lady who lived here before had cats, and there was poop and pee smells all over the carpet so he removed the carpet, but underneath, there are stains and blackspots all over the place? How do I repair them and if I can't repair them, can I use a darker stainer over the already stained floor, to cover up the spots, or will I have to sand it all down and completely start out fresh?

You need to refinish the floor. This is done by hiring a pro, this is a big dirty job, or doing it yourself. To do yourself you need to rent a belt or drum sander and starting with 60 grit remove uneven vertical alignment and all the old finish. Then sand with 100 grit. Then rent a floor orbital sander that uses a big rectangular screen, sand with 120 grit. Now fill all the holes using wood filler for floors. Vacuum up all dust, and using a lambswool applicator, put down three coats of the most expensive finish you can afford. Oh, I left out that you need an edge sander that will do the 60 and 100 grits too.

Once those stains have soaked into the wood, you'll need to sand it down and refinish it.
