Okay, my grandma had died few months ago and my uncle and his wife (we're not happy with her at all) We went through photos that they gave us. Needle to say, they gave us photos that we don't even know who they were. They mostly gave us junk and they kept the great stuff. That's how she is.

Anyway, what should my parents do with old family photos that they don't even know who they are?

ask any other family member if they want the photos. Or if they know who is in the photos . Then if not get rid of them. good luck .

Maybe you should ask your Uncle if he has any idea who these people are.

I'm kind of in the same boat. My mother died some years back and going through her old photos, I found some I have no idea who they are.

Showed them to a cousin of mine (who is much older) and she couldn't identify any of the people, either.

So for now I just hold onto them in a box.

There are people from time to time that post on craigslist asking for old photos

I'm not sure what they do with them but you could either scan posts there to find someone who might want them.

Or post a message yourself saying you have the old photos and want to know if anyone would like them.

I would also arrange with your Uncle to get copies of the photos or at least scans of the photos he kept. That would be the proper thing for him to do being you're interested in the other photos.

Good Luck ...

They could put them on a c.d. and ask later, other family members if they might know who the pictures are of. Even if your parents don't know who the pictures are of, if they are of your ancestors, they are family. It would be nicer and more meaningful though if you all knew who they were of. Would the ones who gave you the photos ,your uncle and hie wife, tell you who the picture were of? It's terrible when grown ups don't care about their parent. When that parent gets old they look at them as a burden or rich old parent if they have lots of money. For Shame on anyone like this.

Kat, just have them call around to see if they can't find someone in the family that might just know these same family members........Such as a "Great Aunt" or "Great Grandma, cousin, neice or nephew" anyone who might know who these people are, and then write on the backs of them who's who.....Get some photo albums, and name them all and put whomever is on which ever side's of the families you know. Or you could go through the Utah, family tree records.. Its called: Vital Statistics I do believe, and its so HUGE it has all American's there, and on Record too!! You might could look them up this way.. This is how my Uncle made our family tree, through spending alot of time online with the Utah Vital Statistics, or someone like that!! They have tons of records of everyone's families from many generations ago!!! We found out we're related too: "John Adam's" from the Mayflower........And ironically enough I took my daughter to a yard sale on My Mom's street a couple of years ago, and this woman was selling little children's books and some were even history books, for kids, right.. Well I bought my daughter these trio of books about the days when this little girl wrote in her diary, right.. Well, come to find out she was on the Mayflower, and wrote about how sweet it was that John Adam's and thiis one lady who also was on the boat were flirting with one another.. Her name was: Remember Patience Whipple, and these were her original diaries!!! That I bought for a Quarter a peice!!! I didn't even know about us being related too John Adam's until later after we had bought these fabulous diaries!! It was so cool !!! So, just have a look at Utah's Vital Statistics first and ask them if you can find a place to where you can find names on photo's your family recieved in a "Family Will" of sorts.....And just go from there!! I'm sorry to you & your family that they just suttley cut you all out of what should have been for your family also!! When people die, some chosen few tend to get really "GREETY!!!" And its so sad, because some of us, would have only wanted something so small as a sort of a nic-nac, and this side of the family that is "Greedy" would just give it away later or even go as far as sell it at a yardsale, or even just throw it away!! How sad is that?!! I'm so sorry for your family!! I've seen this happen to my children through their own Dad's side of their family's members being so Greedy he couldn't even go in and get the family photo's or movies!! So, his own children that are too young too remember thier grandparents anyway dont even so much as have any photo's of their own father as a boy, or their own grandparents.......So, maybe its good that you atleast got some photo's and maybe down the line when things cool down, you can ask this part of the family who these people even are???? They might even know!! Good Luck to you & yours, hun!! Smile!! Things will get better, you'll see!!

Try asking other family members if they know who are in the pics or you could ask grandma's friends.
I would never destroy them as they were your grandma's.Put them in a box and store them away. One day you may come across someone who'll be able to give you some answers about them.
Obviously, they were important to grandma as she kept them all these years.

I think they should keep them anyway because you never know what the future holds and besides, one of those pictures could reveal a relative that they never met before. Maybe even a sibling perhaps. Anyway hold on to those pictures they are worth a thousand words.

Do some family history work and try to find out who is who and lable the pictures and put them in an album. Maybe you can find someone from your family tree that can help you identify the people in the pictures, or maybe they would want them. Or, if you aren't into it, throw 'em out!

Keep them and show them to every family member and friend you can think of. Someone might know who these people are.
