Its likely you've had another animal int eh house - or an animal from the previous owner and they have left there scent there. or if you have had your carpet cleaned your dog may not like the smell and want to leave there mark. They are basically marking there territory! If you havnt had the carpet cleaned recently i suggest you get it cleaned!
If the probelm carries on you could experiment with the 'weed matts' you can buy from pets at home and other pet shops. These are used to train puppies as they are attracted to the scent of these mats and therfore choose to 'do their business' on these matts (perhaps they would prefer this to the carpet!)
Maybe your carpet and these matts have a similar smell??
Good luck!

Clean up that spot with an enzymatic cleaner and then don't let your dog have access to it. If he is still making mistakes in the house, he's not ~quite~ trained yet, and the old smell from where he went before will trigger him to make the mistake again. So, just don't let him around there unsupervised.
Stopping this behavior now will really help you - before it becomes an old habit. If you need to crate him when he can't be watched, that's not a bad thing. If you keep letting him go in that spot, it will be much more work for you to stop him later.
Don't forget to always reward your dog for making the right potty choice! Good luck.

1) stop carrying the dog around
2 ) he is preobably scared of the basement /stairs so he may be letting everything 'go' when hes down there
3 ) can he do stairs in other pplaces ? eg out doors , friends ghouses etc or do all stairs scare him ?
4) start working him on the stairs only one or two to begin with then add anotheretc etc - slow & steady ( that is if you want him to ever do stairs ) use smelly food treets tiny pieces of cheese etc & use HUGEE praise when hie moves up a stair --- wait till dog is confident before starting going down stairs - its more scary for them

5 ) if you know allthe spots he has went tothe washroom down stairs ... take water mixed with vinegar more vin the better & scrubb all the areas througgly let dry then sprinkle with baking soda let sit a hour at least & vacume it up -- should de scent the location

6) he is either soo scaired of the stairs / basement he looses control of everything , or he concideres it his in door potty

good luck

Honestly, an untrained dog can be a real pain - a risk to himself, his owner and to other people and animals. Owning an undisciplined dog may result to:
- Destruction to your home
- Social isolation
- Accidents
- Injuries
- Legal claims against you
- Stress to all concerned
- The dog being unwanted

Canines that always get their own way will believe that life revolves around them and for that reason they must be important. Since dogs are looking for controlling different resources than humans, their bid for power usually goes undetected until it’s too late. Obedience and house training your dog and ensuring he’s not raised to a top position inside the home will keep your relationship with him well-balanced in your favor, as it must be for satisfaction all round.

well when this puppy was very young, when you got him, he probably peed there the first time. you probably cleaned it up, but the dog still smells it. so, thats where he thinks he needs to go pee. what i would do is carry him downstairs and dont let go of him and just take him right outside so he can learn to not pee there

Your dog most likely lives in the upstairs, to your dog, the downstairs is the outdoors. My advice is to walk your dog on a leash down the stairs, so it will get used to that, and then once you are down the stairs, keep walking him without stopping, and take him straight to the outdoors. Good Luck

He might be trying to mark his territory or he could be so scared of the downstairs he pees. Just take him outside and make sure he goes pee before you go down.

The carpet downstair has the smell of his pee and poop and that's why he goes there. Clean up the carpet with a cleaner for carpets and pet odor remover. No bleach. I use fantastic oxy power. That should take care of it.

If he were housetrained he wouldn't be going in the house!! It sounds like he may be going because of fear of the stairs maybe. Train him to go up and down--put him on the lowest stair and let him jump down. Give him a treat. Then, put him up to the next highest stair, etc. Go slowly and use lots of treats and praise.

Might be previous smells, making him think it's okay. But if he hates the stairs and you are carrying him down, it might be a stress thing. Or once he is down, he is afraid to go up and has to go..
