My dogs know they need to go outside to go to the bathroom, but sometimes their little bladders can't wait. Has anyone ever trained their chihuahua to use a litterbox?

Yes, you can litter box train them, but instead of cat litter used newspapers or pee pads made for dogs. They make litter boxes for dogs that have higher sides and a low front access area. This works well for females, but males may lift their legs and "miss". It's still best to train them to go outside whenever possible.

I have not used a litter box, but I found because I'm disabled it's much easier for me to use pee pads for my 4 Chihuahua's than trying to get to the door every half an hour because someone wants out. I pad train all of the many foster Chihuahua's that come through my home too.

If you are able bodied 100% it's best for them to go outside, but if you are not or you have a small dog like a Chi who can;t go too long without needing to go out then pads or litter boxes are a great backup for when you are not around and can;t get them out as often as they need to go.

Be sure to use dog litter if you want to do this. They sell it at PetsMart and places like that.

I have a chihuahua and I have cats. My chihuahua litter box trained himself. Early on in our relationship I was shocked to find him in the litter box urinating. At first I wasn't crazy about the idea because I was nervous about my cats feeling anger towards him in their space and hurting him. To my surprise, my cats don't care at all. He only uses the litter box if my husband and I are not home though otherwise he barks to let us know that he has to go out. I am very lucky!

Puppies can also be proficient to a litterbox (I did it as soon as) however i might not propose it. They're going to be taught that they don't must go outside. Educate the Chihuahua to ring a bell that hangs off the doorknob...Convenient to purchase at a pet retailer and no longer very steeply-priced. When he/she desires to move out, they ring the bell. Much better than a litter box. BTW - I only did it for when my canine was once a pup and we needed to work all day. As quickly as she used to be old ample to "hold it" (a beagle) we did away with the box. We had already proficient her to head outdoors. The litterbox was once for emergencies simplest!!! Fairly...Put a leash on him/her and coach them to go outside. Ain't no three ft of snow in the market now!!! PS - NO protected litterbox!

I had friends who box trained their dachshunds, and they liked it for when they were gone at work. But it does get really smelly.

The person before me doesn't know what they are talking about. Dogs are smart enough to use a box. It is just a matter of training them and having patience.

I have a potty pad trained chihuahua. I buy them in bulk at pet smart. She trained real easy on them. When she was a puppy, every time she would start to squat, we would put her on her potty pad in the bathroom. She was easy to train. I was so surprised. Don't have any accidents at all. Just have to buy the pads once a month about 25 dollars, but it is worth cause she is in the house while we are at work.

It is possible. A lot of people have those pee-pee pads for the animals to go on in the house, if you could get the doggy to go in the litter-box it would be like the same.

canines would be knowledgeable to a litterbox (I did it as quickly as) yet i does not advise it. they'll study that they do no longer would desire to bypass outdoors. practice the Chihuahua to strike a chord that hangs off the doorknob...uncomplicated to purchase at a puppy save and not very costly. whilst he/she desires to bypass out, they ring the bell. a lot extra beneficial than a muddle field. BTW - I in basic terms did it for whilst my canines became a puppy and we had to artwork all day. as quickly as she became the right age to "carry it" (a beagle) we did away with the field. We had already knowledgeable her to bypass outdoors. The litterbox became for emergencies in basic terms!!! incredibly...placed a leash on him/her and practice them to bypass outdoors. Ain't no 3 feet of snow available now!!! playstation - NO lined litterbox!

LMAO dogs are not smart enough to use a box. Most dogs can't even be pad trained. Next time get larger dogs. Don't leave them alone so long. If you want independent creatures that can be left alone for long periods of time, get a cat, or a fish.
I suppose it could be done, with a smart dog, but chihuahuas don't exactly impress me with their intelligence. My guess is if my friend can't get his Papillons (which are a lot smarter) to use a pad, you won't be able to get yours to use a litter box.
Sorry, not trying to be mean, I just couldn't help myself. Next it will be horses using outhouses. lol
If someone has answered that they have managed this somehow, I will gladly take it all back : )
