A question for Slayer fans: When Buffy and friends have another demonic bad guy to fight, why do they always start by digging through mountains of dusty books to figure out what it is? Why don't they simply PRAY about it?

I don't really know the mindset Joss Whedon was working with when he wrote that. It might be because Giles (and, later, Wesley) did a lot of the research and were the the majority of the mind force behind the group; England isn't as religious as America, so the idea of prayer probably didn't occur to them.
