An infection is when a biological agent, virus, bacteria, whatever, get into the body and try to cause harm. White blood cells try to fight them off, causing swelling, redness, whiteness at the point of wounding (as in a cut, scratch, splinter entry, etc.)
The infection is caused by foreign agents; the body is trying to defend against them.
