Hi, so I need some help. In my back yard we have a little baby pool for my dog, and just a few minutes ago I was outside with my dog, and I saw her pull something out of the pool, and when I looked it was a bird. The thing is the bird was still breathing. So my mother picked up the bird with paper towels and now has it drying in a makeshift "nest" of paper towels. I think it's some sort of finch, and it looks pretty young. It's still breathing, but it looks exhausted. I just wanted to see what else I can do for the bird to try and help it survive? Thanks

As I said before I did not touch the bird, the only things that have touched the bird were my dog (not much I could have done about that) and paper towels. And we couldn't have left it where it was because it was drowning in a pool!!!

It turns out that after about an hour of drying out in the sun on my back porch, the bird sat up and kinda flew away until it got into some bushes. So I guess it was a fledgling. Thanks for all the help!!!

Is this bird fully feathered, or mostly bald?? If fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling that has left the nest on it's own and is being cared for by it's parents until it learns to fly. If not injured, and once it is dry and rested, you can put it back near where you found it in a tree or scrub where hopefully a predator will not get it. You can watch from a hidden area to see if the parents are coming to feed it. If they see you they will not come. Keep in mind, visits to feed can be quick, you may miss it if you look away for too long. If after a while (an hour or so) you see no parents, take the bird to a wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival. If it is mostly bald...look for a nest near where you found him, and you can replace him into the nest. Do not worry about your scent being on him, birds have a poorly developed sense of smell, the parents will not abandon due to this. If no nest can be found...once again your only option is a rehab. Look here for one in your area:

for many songbirds, there's a great rule of thumb: the guideline of the thumb! by that I recommend, can the poultry sit down up on your thumb (or finger) by itself? If it may, then it somewhat is a FLEDGLING and could be left on my own! Nestling songbirds can not stability on their very own or grip a perch till proper at fledging. If the poultry can stability ok, then it somewhat is meant to be out of the nest. it may no longer look like it, even though it somewhat is. it could have some feathers over lots (yet no longer all) of its physique, and the wing and now and lower back the top feathers would be protruding of little tubes (the feather sheathes). it would nonetheless have tufts of down on its head or on different areas of the physique. So, if it type of feels ok, no longer injured, purely no longer able to fly, and it may perch by itself, you ought to placed IT back the place YOU discovered IT. although if the mothers and fathers weren't proper there yelling at you, opportunities are high that they comprehend the place the newborn exchange into and have been doing all they might to shelter it. do no longer hassle approximately them forsaking it in view which you touched it; birds do no longer try this. (they might, although, abandon nests in case you get too close, extraordinarily in the event that they have eggs and not nestlings.) purely get it back to the place they are able to looking it and the place it somewhat is going to be risk-free. do no longer placed it in an enclosed section that the mothers and fathers would be afraid to pass into. Get it someplace it may finally circulate off by itself

i used to volunteer at a wild bird rehabilitation center and have seen cases like this. chances are that you won't be able to keep him alive on your own. try to find a wild life rehab or a wild life vet clinic and allow the proffessionals to do the work. he probably has water in his lungs and won't last long witout medical attention. if you insist on keeping him your local petco or petsmart (or whatever petstore) should hae a powder that you mix with water for food but again you have to now how much to insert into the stomach and know how to get t the stomach. it's good that you want to help him though.

look around for the nest. it should be some place close by. call a wildllife rehablitator to take your feathered friend if you cant find the nest. meanwhile, find a worm and get an eyedropper. squish the worm up and suck it in with the eyedropper and feed it to the chick. good luck and i hope i helped

I would call your local vet or animal shelter and ask them for help-you weren't really supposed to touch the bird, because its mother might not come back if it can sense a human touched it, but since you already did the best thing to do is to call the vet.

Take him to a vet or a wild life refuge. He will die if he doesn't get the proper attention. I have tried to save many birds myself and they always died. Look up wild life refuge in your phone book and see if they will help, or the vet.

Just give it some time and rest. If it perks up later maybe give it some bird seed, then set it out side where it can finish recuperating on its own.

keep it warm would be the main thing and get the feathers completely dry. they will die when their down feathers get wet. if it is a finch- it should be able to eat seed, like for parakeets

It takes 6 seconds for the Yahoo Answers webpage to load for me to be able to click on the [add your answer] box. does this mean my laptop is slow?
