My dog is constantly shaking his head and scratching at his ears. I have looked inside and I do not see anything. The last time he did this though he did have mites. What do they look like and can you actually see them without a magnifying glass? Also does anyone know any home remedies or must I take him to the vet?

Some dogs can scratch their ears due from allergies causing the itch or it can be something way down in the canal. I would suggest taking him to the vet since they have an otoscope and can actually see down their a bit further than the average human eye.

Dogs do NOT commonly get mites so unless actaully diagnosed by a vet it should never be treated for mites..Take the dog to the vet to get a proepr diagnosis..ear infections of various types are far more common in dogs then mites and they need appropriate treatment.
Do NOT self medicate as this could do seriosu harm to the ear including deafness and it could also make any existing condition worse.

It definitely sounds like he could have ear mites, especially since you say it resembles him behavior from another time when he did have ear mites. When in doubt, take a visit to your vet - or a least give him a call and ask about the problem.

I wouldnt recommend putting anything in your dogs ears without approval from your vet. The ears are very sensitive and delicate, and you dont want to damage anything inside his ears.

It sure sounds like ear mites. Those things drove my Doberman crazy.Use mineral oil to drown them. When the ear gets dirty,it sets up something in which the mites will thrive.
The dirt does not need to be visible, there is ear wax and stuff in there too.
Use the oil and then clean the ear.Use Q-Tips to clean the channel.
A vet can sell you a mineral oil with a pesticide in it for about 5 or 10 bucks.Or,just buy the usual kind and try that.

I recommend that you take your dog to the vet. It sounds like mites are a possibility. Mites are small and are not easily seen. They're pretty easy to clear up with the right medication though. Good luck.

if the ears look dirty then it is probably ear mites. they have over the counter ear mite medicine that works great or if you have any cats that have ear mite medicine and dont feel like going anywhere you can use that. after they are cured your dog will feel a lot better and be more affectionate.
