I've had a male dwarf hamster for about a year now. Sometimes I notice he has what I like to call a "goopy" eye, only one eye though, and it looks like its almost shut. But the weird part is, it's only like this for awhile. I'll take him out of his cage and his eye will be like that and after I've played with him for awhile his eye will go back to normal? He has no other symptoms, still very active, still big appetite. I was just wondering what could be wrong with him. Thanks!

This is not necessarily an allergy. Some dwarf hamsters are more prone to goopy eye than others, and once they get it, they keep getting it.

You can try changing his bedding, I recommend the soft pine shavings. Kaytee makes both Pine and Aspen bedding. The pine is made to be low dust, and the Aspen has no oils in it, which is usually what irritates hamsters. I used Kaytee Pine EXCLUSIVELY for all of my hamsters, including nursing mothers. I had one hamster that got goopy eye, and I switched his bedding to the Aspen, and it happened much less frequently after that.

Check out the website below for more information. Quoting from that website: "Occasionally a hamster may get a sticky eye where the eyelids are fused together and older hamsters may be prone to 'sticky eyes'. This is often because a hamster may have something it its eye such as a piece of dust or it could be because the hamster's cage is placed in a draught or could be a symptom of a cold or allergy. The closed eye should be wiped with a small piece of cotton wool soaked in luke warm water. This is usually sufficient to open the eye but if not the eyelids can gently be pulled apart."

Maybe your hamster is allergic to the food, the bedding, or some formula on your clothes or skin

he might just have soemthing in his eye. the eye reacts to get out the junk by watering and this causes the "goop" which can sometimes cause the eye to fuse closed! its no big deal. to help though get dust free bedding!

Just so that you get the best answer possible to your question, I would take him to the vet. Vet's know better than anyone else what is wrong with your little critter, and can help you. Good luck!
