Chickens only make noise in certain situations. When you go out to feed them they will sometimes be a little noisey, but not to the point where they are annoying. In the morning the rooster will crow. But, this shouldn't be a problem unless you live in a close neighborhood. But, if you do you may not be able to even get chickens.
Hen's will also cluck when they laid an egg. But, this isn't very loud and is always during the day when people are awake.
Another time chickens will make noise is when you add a new bird to the flock. This is so because the birds will have to rearange the pecking order.
Birds will also be very noisy if they are in danger. As long as it is dark where the birds are sleeping at night they will not wake you because they are sleeping also. If you do hear a noise it is because something is messing with your chickens and you may want to stop that before one of your birds is killed.
One thing that I have also noticed is that some breeds of birds make more noise then others. One of these breeds that I found this to be true with was the Leghorn. So I would suggest calmer breeds like the Austrop or Brahma for you.

Hope that this helps.

If you do get chickens then I would get chicks and let them grow up in your back yard where they will be used to all "your" backyard noises. Chickens some times get excited and make a lot of noise when they hear or see things they're not used to. Even so, if they're surprised by a dog or cat then you will hear they're crazy clucking until they settle down again. Also I think they're noisy when someone lays an egg and everyone celebrates! :)

Chickens can be noisy...but they aren't really annoying. They make the most noise in the mornings...yes, before anyone else is up. If you don't have close neighbors I wouldn't worry about it. It's the roosters that are the worst. If you live in the city call your city counsel and make sure they are allowed inside the city limits. Many cities do not allow them. I tried in my city and they said NO. Grrr. I asked them what the fine would be if I were "caught". Hee, they said NO CHICKENS IN THE CITY LIMITS. LOL. Good luck. Love the chickens. Get bannies. So cute and very social.

If they look worried, I would check around the coop for rat holes, or other signs of wild animals such as foxes or raccoons. Make sure that wild animals don't have any access to the chicken's food. They can scare the chickens and pass on diseases. Also, to keep my chickies healthy I put a spoonful of plain yogurt or apple cider vinegar in their water everyday, it's supposedly good for their immune systems. What I do for my sick chickens is mix up oats, yogurt, and corn or cornmeal and then warm the mixture up. That sometimes helps. There are also a bunch of chicken help websites online, you could check there :)

Chickens are quiet at night unless they are frightened. During the day they are for the most part quiet except for roosters crowing and hens clucking after they lay eggs.
