Ok, many times depression meds are also used for anxiety. You have to learn how to keep yourself calm, and redirect your energy, in order to "rewire" you brain chemicals so you can be in control of your emotions, feelings, and not have to take the medication. Going to a GP, all they will do is give you meds, you need counselling to teach you how to maintain your stability, and meditation, even if it's just breathing exercises to a yoga disc or the like, will help you immensely, and you won't have to worry about the meds or the side effects. Doctors like a GP only treat superficially, you will need the assistance of someone who specialises in anxiety control to get it stable and not needs meds any longer.

First of all, I'm really happy for you that you have such a supportive family! Secondly, the depression part of what you're feeling is not uncommon in pregnancy. I actually became quite depressed during pregnancy, I felt ugly, I didn't want to be around anyone, and I had some anxiety issues. Sounds similar to what you're experiencing. Remember...your hormones are out of wack right now, and can cause a lot of mood swings, and can even make you feel like a different person. BUT...I would suggest telling your doctor how you are feeling, to see if there's anything that can help you through this. If you talk to your doc about it, he/she will also be able to keep a closer eye on you for post-pardum depression, and help you ward off that possibility. Good luck! I hope everything works out for you. Trust me, once you see your little bundle of joy, you will know that this has all been worth it. :)

When you were given your prescription, you should have also been given a list of side effects. These are the only things you need to be concerned about looking for. The medications regulated chemicals that are produced in your body. If you are not depressed you should not have any bad side effects as you put it, and no, you will not become excessively 'happy.'

Antidepressants are used for more than just to treat depression. They have other clinical applications too, like to treat nerve pain. (I take them for this reason and remarkably it works.)

If you are not sure why the meds are prescribed then you need to discuss this with your doctor.

Then your statement of "I don't feel anything really" applies to that diagnosis. Hopefully the meds will just help that aspect. Give them a bit to work. If you don't see any improvement, as your doc will be asking you, he will either adjust the dosage, or try another med.

Good luck.

You're not going to have bad side effects just because you aren't depressed, other than the side effects of the medication itself that would happen regardless of your mental state. But you need to ask your doctor if the meds really are necessary, and for what exactly you're being treated.

It's like taking tylenol or aspirin when you don't have a headache. Nothing will happen. You will not have any bad side effects.

But, in case you are feeling depressed, it will help. So, just to be sure, do take them. It's like taking a multi-vitamin. It's good for you. It will help if you need it. And if not, it'll come out when you use the washroom. No worries. Only good can come out of it ;)
