I just got home from visitng Rome, Florence and Venice last week, you go into any store called Tabacherri, where they sell cigarettes and snacks, they sell international phone cards there also. The best one is called the Welcome card, it is 5 euro, so a little over $6 american, it gave me over an hour and a half time to talk, awesome!!!!!!

Yahoo Messenger with Voice is always the cheapest. I've used it many many times from Italy to the U.S. Calls are just 1 US cent per minute 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can always find Internet Cafes near tourist areas in large Italian cities and most of the small ones as well. These cafes will almost always have headsets connected to the computers. The cafes will charge you about €1 to €2 per hour to use the computer. Just install Yahoo Messenger on the computer (if it's not already installed), put on the headset, and make your calls...
Good luck!

If you have a computer the the cheapest way to call the USA is with Viopstunt. You will need to invest in a headset so that you can speak and listen and then you will need to pay about 10 euro to start your Voipstunt account, but that will last you over 3 months.
I live in Italy but all my friends and family are in the USA and I can spend hours on the phone with them now. It is the best way to keep in touch.
If you do not have a computer then Calling cards are a better way to go. The ones you can use with land lines are much cheaper than cell phone ones. I used to buy one that was 5 euro that had about 100 minutes on it. (But Voipstunt is m u c h more economical!)

Short of having a computer and using Skype or some other voip system, buying an international calling card is the cheapest way to go.
Go to a Tabacchi (any store or coffee bar with a sign with a large T out front) and ask for a "carta telefonica internazionale." Some of the best to use for calling the states are Europa, Happiness or Welcome. For 5 euro, about $6.50 US, you will get around 4 hours of calling time to the U.S. which is pretty darn cheap. The amount of time you have to talk can depend on whether you are calling from a fixed line, a public phone or a cell phone and whether you are calling a fixed phone or a cell phone (calling from fixed line to fixed line is cheapest), but in any case you won't be paying more than say 4 or 5 cents a minute.

I live in Italy! I have a vonage phone so I have the unlimited plan for 24.99 calls anywhere in the world, but if you can't do that then I would say buy a phone card. If you want Vonage go to www.vonage.com the only thing is that you have to have the modem mailed to someone in the states and they have to mail it you, you have to have ADSL or a high speed internet. But if you get the unlimited package its cheaper per minute then using your Italian cell phone or Italian house phone from Telecom. If you can't do vonage and dont want a calling card a Italian cell phone which is cheaper than a calling card is even better then the phone card they dont have international rate plans on cell phones here since everything is prepay but there is a number 429001then your number and it saves you money/minutes I have a vodaphone cell phone and I use this when my internet is down at my house. US calling cards are had to use because they have you deal into a 1800 number you cant call 800 numbers from overseas because of the country code so if you use a US calling card make use it has a regualar area for it or it will not work. If you decide to do vonage email and I can refer you and you can get your first month free.

Telecom Italia rates are the lowest between 10pm and 8am Monday thru Saturday and all day Sunday. The absolute cheepest way is computer to computer via Skype, MSN and all of the other free services you'll find on line. Your hotel may provide this service for a fee as well as the internet cafes. You may also want to pick up some international phone cards before leaving but read the small print first and make sure you don't pick cards that are about to expire.

One of the cheapest ways to make international calls, is to get hold of a phone card before you leave in the US, from AT&T (tel 1-800/543-3117) or MCI (tel 1-800/444-3333, www.mci.com ).
It's cheaper to dial internationally between 10pm and 8am Monday to Saturday, and all day on Sunday. Unusually, it's often less expensive to make calls from your hotel than to use the pricey public telephones, whether for domestic or international calls. <*-*>
