hi, i will be travelling to Hat Yai on 20th July, staying for about 1 to 2 days, then flying back.
I know that the political climate is unstable etc.
But considering that i will only be staying for a few days, do you think it will be safe?
Which areas to avoid?
Anything i should take note of?
Thanks alot!
=)

Hatyai is absolutely OKAY. Just don't stray outside the city as it is very risky in the Southern provinces right now and nobody can guarantee your safety.

I've been there for 3 days 3 years ago. It is different from other places such as Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Samui, Chang Mai.

There just are not so many non-orientals there.

There are alot of night clubs there but I saw alot of ugly old men from M'sia going into them with the best looking women I have ever seen in Thailand. I didn't think it was safe to go into the clubs there alone.

There is a small market to walk around at nite. There is also a beach but I only saw 1 other white person there.

Very quiet area!

Very difficult to say that. Even Hat Yai people, they are also afraid of the stupid situation caused by damn people (sorry for rude, actually we don't want to measure them as a human).

Just aware of yourself in everywhere you go. Take a look in everything, suspected people (isalamic people) or suspected any parcels/packages/bins would be a good warn. In major places like airport or banks there will be seriously security by army as I saw.

Best wishes to you.

Canadian government is warning its citizens not to travel to Hat Yai because of the ongoing conflict there.

Here is what they say about it:

Of course, maybe nothing will happen to you if you go there. But you would be taking a risk.

ok i just moved from the LA area to Hawaii so I'll try to help out with what I know and its hard moving to a new environment so good luck with this. I dont know where you are from, but if its nothing like LA, than it will probably be quite different for you both. As of now minimum wage in California is $8 per hour. Yes thats higher than most places, like here in Hawaii its 7.25, but the point is that $8 will only stretch so far. I don't know what trades/skills you both possess but hopefully you have some or experience because employment with higher pay will help you out a lot in LA. At 18 years old though, I highly doubt that you both have any degrees or skills that would qualify you for something with higher (livable) pay than just a high school diploma. Depending on your income, you could move to a number of places. Many people who work in LA do not live in LA. There are a bunch of people who commute to LA everyday, and suffer through the traffic during peak traffic hours. If I remember, traffic was killer between around 6am to 10am on the 10 or 60 freeway toward LA weekdays. East (away from LA) the traffic kicked in again around 2:30pm to 8pm possibly. Traffic is unpredictable but a sure thing still. I would recommend the San Gabriel Valley and eastern cities to live in. Rent will be cheaper than living in LA. Covina (nice), Glendora, Chino, Claremont, Upland, Alta Loma/Rancho Cucamonga. These cities range from 25 miles to 40 miles away from LA. The rent can be low as 800 to 2000 depending where you live and the dwelling you stay in. LA areas that are cheap are more likely not as safe for you and your other friend or whatever. Don't go to south LA, I dont think you would like it there. I worked there for 9 months and I think it would be too different for you, depending where you're from. Hollywood, my sisters grew up there, they came out all right. They used to party and go out a lot in the streets, so I dont know what interests you might find there. East La seems to be more hispanic based, as many businesses are spanish based and the people there speak spanish too. Are you bilingual? West LA is nice but pricey for you both until you find good pay. Overall, LA....the weather is good, the minimum wage is higher than other states, the beaches are close enough, it can be entertaining, there are many colleges/schools to choose from (highly recommend some post high school education) you need school!, and the people in LA are...okay. Good and Bad where ever you go right? Bad side: it can be crowded (traffic), higher insurance rates (car) i paid 150 monthly now i pay 90 in HI, Housing can be expensive especially if you want to buy a house, Some parts are dirty, LA is big plenty of space to get lost in, you might need to learn spanish, you need a car, high gas prices (everywhere), People can be rude especially in traffic. higher crime, thefts. Check out craigslist for housing and jobs. plan way ahead of time and save money. Don't think that LA will be glorious and the best place ever, it takes work to live in LA or the areas around it. I moved away because LA is not that great to me, I like nature, HI is pretty green. But good luck again and don't give up.
