in other words is it something i need or is it just something used to connect another device like a DVD player

No, you can use component cables and still get a High Definition signal. I must say that HDMI cables are so cheap, there isn't much of a debate over getting them or not. They are clearly a better technology, and a lot cleaner behind your TV/Wall.

HDMI is " High Definition Multimedia Interface ". You don't need it to have HD, just a good shielded set of component cables. If you are going HDMI to HDMI, you can eliminate the component & audio cables, because HDMI carries both.

If you are receiving HD channels then you need the HDMI or use component cables. You cannot get HD quality picture any other way. DVI cable will also but it only transfers video not audio.

There are three connectors that can deliver HD:

1) HDMI
2) DVI
3) Component

Obviously, HDMI and DVI will deliver the best quality because they are digital. But, component is a close second.
