Since Paul & Peter were specially chosen by the Lord Jesus Christ himself, why did they suffer so much?

It shows that their commitment was genuine to non-believers, that they really believed what they taught.

It will result in great reward for them (as far as they were walking in love - 1 Corinthians 13), since their faith was tested and proved genuine.

It does seem offputting though, that God allowed them to suffer. (In one of Paul's letters he's actually worried that the persecution he's going through might discourage the church he's writing to.) Apparently martyrs in the Coliseum had such incredible visions and such powerful experiences of the presence of God, that at times people voted to be the ones who would be martyred. They really really believed. I'm currently too timid to want to put my physical life in danger or endure great suffering.

Abel,
We are not told that we won't suffer. In fact we expect to suffer and eventually die so that we may be in Heaven with HIM eternally. We are told that we will not be given more than we can take and that we can always find a way out. The Apostles expected to be tortured and die in HIS NAME. They did so to spread the GOOD NEWS of Jesus Christ. Get a BIBLE and study it so that you too may become a Christian. Have a great day.
Thanks,
Eds

Really shows you that propertiy preachers like Robert Shuller and Joel Osteen don't know what they are talking about.

2 Tim 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

Actually all the diciples were tortured and all gave their lives exept John who was only boiled in oil and exiled to the island of Patmos. Interesting how they all counted it joyful to suffer for Jesus Christ. Must be something spiritual about it.

confident we could desire to continuously assume to go through. in basic terms look interior the Bible and notice what Paul and the apostles suffered for his or her faith. we could desire to continuously count extensive type it a privilege to go through for Christ, because of the fact our suffering can not even evaluate to what He went by using for us.
