You can use any type of slow-growing tree. It is the training process by which the trees are dwarved. This usually consists of removing terminal buds, and thus reducing the amount of gibberilins in the plant, keeping it from elongating (the same process that makes well-trimmed bushes so . . . bushy) Keep in mind that the plant is a TREE--so if you have a tree from a temperate region, it will need to be appropriately wintered to go into a dormant stage. It will die if kept as a houseplant. Tropical trees can be kept as bonsais in the house. Please see:

You can buy a bonsai tree kit that has the starter tree and directions on how to trim. Great fun!
