If the police were present at the incident then they will arrest but if they were called to the incident then they will use their discretion based on statements and the events that occured, if it was domestic violence or if children were present then that is enough to have the police arrest the person who is fighting.
If you get a ticket(summons) instead of going to jail that is still considered an arrest and the officer who arrested you or issued a ticket will input that into the police records and will now show up as an arrest, it will most likely say that so and so was arrested and released on *****charges.
Be very careful as being convicted of assault can put a huge blemish on your life as many places dont rent to violent offenders and many jobs will not hire people with anysort of violent record no matter how minimal or if it was your first time.
As background checks can and most of the time check arrest records so stay clear of situations like this and if a charge happens then dont hesitate and get a defensive attorney right away as charges like this will perhaps change your future.

Not necessarily you get to be lock up. If you happen to participate in a brawl just like your story, and it so happen cops are within the vicinity and get to the scene, they will pick you and others who started the brawl.
You will be brought to the precint for further investigation, and inquiry regarding the incident. They will get statement from both parties, your word against the other parties involved. They will assest the situation who is the culprit and the one who will pay for damages if any, since this is just a misdemeanor, the police will allow you to post bail for the meantime if they found out your the one started it, but you will not be lock up. You are set free for the next hearing of your case filed by the other party. If you cannot pay the bail that is the only time you will spend the night in jail, until your immediate friends or family can post the bail.
So next time don't get into trouble, that is the moral issue. Ah..there is still one question"does it go to your record.." nope it won't unless the court has proven that you are the one who started it, or you loose the case. So this is now a civil case, you will pay the other party for damages but you won't go to jail and since they have convicted you already that is the time this one goes to your record, as public record in the police data system. As trouble maker.

It's at the discretion of the police officers or at the discretion of the other girl (depending on the state you live in). The police may even be obligated by law to lock you up.

If the fight was pretty balanced, some states would call you both mutual combatants and you might just get ticketed. If it was decided that you were the primary aggressor, then you would be arrested and charged with assault/battery. Following a conviction, you would have a misdemeanor on your record.

It really depends on whether the cops had their donuts already or not.
They can issue a summons and you have to turn up in court, or they can just take you for that shot of virility
