Lots of good answers already, but why not take driving lessons? You'll get proper instruction and information, and they don't yell and shout at you.

Every green light is a potential yellow light waiting to happen. Your mom is panicking because she is overly-concerned about you having or causing an accident. Mom's aren't the best people to have in the passenger seat. The next time she wants you to drive, tell her you will as long as she doesn't have a cow; otherwise, you would rather she do the driving. You also have the option of pulling over, getting out and letting her drive. Tell her she is making you nervous. As you approach an intersection with a green light, slow down to a speed that will enable you to stop should the light change to yellow. Attempt to be about one car length behind the vehicle in front of you for each ten miles an hour that you are diving. It gives you plenty of time to stop without cramming on your brakes.

Realize your mom is scared, she's not used to being in the passenger seat without any controls. You are relatively new at driving and she isn't a professional driving instructor, she is just a licensed driver without the professional training needed to teach you how to drive and remember, she's your mom. People scream and yell when they don't know what to do in a dangerous situation and learning to drive qualifies as a dangerous situation. Tell your mom that the smoothness of driving will come with a lot of practice.
The solution is to hire an expert driving instructor to work on your visual scanning habits while driving, proper scanning habits eliminate the need for "sudden manuevers", you will drive smoother and your mom will relax and stop screaming. Besides, a few advanced driving lessons are much cheaper that any accident

Don't go through intersections too fast. Start slowing down just a tad when approaching an intersection. That way, if it turns yellow, you can slowly apply the brake.

the earlier advice on slowing and looking ahead is accurate. one little trick on looking ahead at intersections is to look at the crosswalk signals - the "walk" signal means the light will be green for a while yet - when it starts to flash "don't walk" the traffic signal will be going yellow soon. the solid "don't walk" signal isn't as much help to you, but probably means that the light will be turning soon.

Tell her that her backseat driving will be the cause of an accident. That you love her but for the sake of a safe commute to sit quietly. Then put music she likes on the radio.

Anticipate what may be happening up ahead. Keep your eyes on traffic at least two cars ahead of you, but be aware of what's going on, directly in front of you.
