I heard Abrams have survived direct hits from Iraqi tanks, albeit the older ones. If its armour can stand a large calibre round, it should survive 30mm cannon fire.

off course he can and belief me one run is more than sufficient to take out a M1 tank because
- the top armour is the most weak part off a tank
- the gau 30 mm is a very effective weapon specially designing to kill tanks
- don't only take the caliber in account but also the initially speed of departure of the round so can a smaller round with a higher speed do more damage that a large slower round
- don't give a Abrams mystical powers it is a MBT like all the other modern day tanks

also don't forget the America's are master in blue on blue
so a warthog can take out a M1

A-10 Cannon

The 30mm round used by the A-10 Warthog is derived from the same material as the M1A2 Abrams "Sabot" armor piercing round. It is made from tungsten and depleted uranium. This makes the round very heavy, and allows the A-10 to fire at the top of the tank, where the armor is the weakest. As good as the armor of an M1 is, I don't think it could withstand more than one or two bursts from the GAU-8/B "Avenger" cannon that the A-10 carries. The armor on a tank it intended to withstand/stop/deflect a hit from the sides, not from the top, or it would be much heavier and slower than it's astounding 55+tons as it is.

Yes. A WW2 tank would not have the armour to sustain hits from modern day shells. Tiger Tanks would also not have the shells that could hurt an Abrams armour. A couple of interesting notes. The Abrams tanks have British Chobham Armour, and a German Rhienmetall primary armament. The modern day German tank is the Leopard 2, which has the same armour and primary armament.

Why would an A-10 be firing on an Abrams?

Yes, the M1 Abrams has survived direct hits from many weapons including T72 tank's main gun.

The A10 Warthog is designed for close air support. The A10 fires down striking one of the weakest points on a tank the top. The A10 fires armor peircing rounds that can easily destroy any tank in the world.

it really depends on where the attack is concentrated it can disable it and damage it to where it is beyond use but i don't think a 30mm Puff could destroy an Abrams the A10 "warthog" is a formidable weapon a flying tank in itself !
