Just not during the school holidays, that's when anywhere in NZ is at their busiest. Airfares go up too during that time.

Yes, there is no South Island in Oz, but the NZ section is out of action!!

Anyway...yes try to avoid the school holidays...they are in them at the moment and the terms are usually 10weeks so there will be more in about 10 weeks........

From what the people in the backpackers ( where I do some part time cleaning) tell me, Sept ( and May) seem to be the down times....with the interveening times busier..winter will be less busy in general, but not in the skiing areas.

I would look to these times as your best option, just to point out the main school holidays are the end of Dec to early Feb and the other school holidays 2 weeks every 10 weeks or so.
Christchurch is a big enough city tho to not be overleaded ( except if there is something on eg big rugby games, or other major events.

Ignore those who say your question is in the wrong section. It in Christchurch NZ, where it should be.
Christchurch is the "garden city" and there is not really an off season.
Over here winter is the skiing season and Christchurch is a good jumping off point.
In summer it is a wonderful seaside city, close to several Salmon and trout fishing rivers that are second to none.

Hi, sorry we don't have a "South Island" here in Australia.
We have Tasmania they are down south and is worth a visit, but they are part of Australia and we say Tasmania not the south Island and they don't have a Christchurch but I do know they have a Church of Christ.
When traveling to Tasmania do it after the month of October as it starts to head into summer, remember school holidays run for 10 weeks in Tasmania because the don't take any in the winter months because its too cold.
Hope this helps Waltz.
