You need a postal scale. These will go from 1 oz. to 10 pounds. You can probably even get a bigger one if necessary. They are compact, they are about the size of a dictionary. They will cost around $35.

The way most vets weigh the smaller animals such as cats and dogs is the get on the scales and see what they weigh that very minute then they take the pet in their arms and step back on the scales and see what the combination weight is and subtract their weight and then they have the weight of the pet. This is how you should weigh your cats.

What you do is to get a scale and step on it yourself and then write down the weight and then take the kitten or cat and then get on the scale and then write that weight down and then subtract that from the first weight and then you have what the kitten weighs or the cat.

Contact either your vets office, the Humane Society or SPCA. They should be able to tell you where you can get a scale made especially for this purpose--very much like an infant weighing scale. If you have children, and a good pediatrician, he/she may also be able to lead you to one. It doesn't have to be a brand new one, as long as it is calibrated right and weighs accurately. I am assuming that you take in and foster kittens quite often, so this is not something that's just going to sit in the corner and collect dust--you're going to be using it quite frequently. So, yes any one (or more) of these places should be able to lead you to one---and if you get REAL lucky, perhaps one of these places will give or lend you one.

A digital kitchen scale or a digital postal scale (pretty much the same thing). They work great and display in ounces also. Go to Ebay, I got mine there very cheap and use it to weigh newborn puppies.

There are electronic food scales that measure up to 2 kilos (4 pounds). They are very accurate and that's what I use.

Here's how you do it - climb on the scale yourself and see how much you weigh. Then pick up the animal and see how muchyou weigh with animal. Subtract the one from the other and you have their weight - easy.

The vet weighs them in the carrying cage, takes the cat out, and weighs the carrying cage. The math involved after that isn't that tough.

See if you can rent a triple beam baby scale from the Drug Store, or buy a cheap one from a store like Target.

Do you know anyone who reloads their own shotgun shells or deals drugs? A reloading scale would be perfect!
