Saw a show about hot dogs some time back. They originated in Germany - Frankfurt to be exact.

Sausage has been around for a long time in all parts of Europe, and the frank came from Germany (Frankfurt, to be precise). But I'm pretty sure that the hot dog itself is a product of the capitalism of America becase the link comes from the pieces of meat left over from other, "higher quality" sausages.
