I'm not a WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant). I'm a Italian Catholic, and I'm going to a steakhouse buffet for lunch today after helping set up the altar for Mass. Just because one goes to a buffet doesn't necessarily mean that one is forced to eat everything that's on it. Buffets make a lot of sense to me when I'm dining with people who have varied dietary needs (I'm having lunch with a vegetarian and a diabetic today, and with a buffet, everybody can get what they need). A lot of vegetarians I know like Golden Corral and similar restaurants because, although these places serve meat, they also maintain a good salad bar. Oh, and in this area, the buffets are heavily patronized by non-WASP immigrants, who seem to make up a majority of the clientele.

The idea that gluttony is a major sin came from the church in Rome and is not found in the Bible. In the KJV here's what you read about it and the exact meaning of the word itself is determined by the context and it is unlikely that it means someone who eats a lot of food all of the time.

Deuteronomy 21:20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton (zālal), and a drunkard.

zālal - A verb meaning to be vile, frivolous, gluttonous, worthless; to despise. It describes an especially serious corruption of character in a worthless, gluttonous son (Deu_21:20), closely akin to one who drinks too much (Pro_23:20-21). A good son avoids company with this vile, gluttonous person (Pro_28:7). It is the opposite of what is useful, valuable, and precious (Jer_15:19). It means to hold up to disdain, to despise (Lam_1:8).

II. A verb indicating to quake, to shake, to tremble. It refers poetically to the response of the mountains to God's descent upon them (Isa_64:1 [63:19], Isa_64:3
