About a week ago I got a tattoo that cover's my whole foot. Ive followed the artist intruction's and i am not putting lotion on it. I noticed that there is some peeling, but its just one little piece. IS this normal? What is the difference between peeling and scabbing? On the intructions it says it should not scab if i religously put the ointment and lotion on it.

Scabbing is not a normal occurrence for a tattoo but it does happen. It is the body's defense mechanism working in that fluids escape from the "wound" to form a shield of protection to start the healing process.

It is not preferred to happen for tattoos because if scabs are "injured" it can cause ink loss and ruin a great tattoo. Heavy scabbing is the result of overworking an area as well and sometimes cracks and splits causing scarring. By keeping the tattooed area clean of fluid build up and applying the after care product as instructed very sparingly, the incidence of scabbing can be avoided or at least decreased (sometimes in areas where there is a lot of movement it is unavoidable.)

Peeling occurs normally. Just as the outer layer of skin is damaged by a sunburn and must peel off, the tattooing affects the skin as well. Since some ink is trapped in that outer layer it will appear as if the ink is coming off. Normal. It takes at least a week of healing after peeling before you see what you will end up with for a tattoo.

you'll know its a scab if it scabs, just like when you fell and scraped your knees as a child, except the scab will be the color of the ink.
I've had scabbing in parts of two of my tattoos. those areas took the longest to heal and ALL the ink came out in those spots! Its hard cause you can follow directions and such, but sometimes there's nothing you can do about it.
The other areas and my other tattoos were healed beautifully! only took a week, and the skin just kinda lightly flaked off of them, or rolled off like a sunburn. Either way they didn't scab and they are beautiful.
So just keep following the directions. Don't let it get goopy (it needs to breath) but don't let it get really dry and tight either.
