What if a 16-year old decided to leave the state and find a cheap room somewhere. He/she gets a job and supports his/herself and finds a roommate who will live with a kid. He/she pays rent, gas and all that good stuff. So the parents call the police, what will they do? Could they find him/her that easily? And would that kid face a problem in court/end up on paroll? I'm not considering it... I am just very curious as to what may happen.

Get a job, get a room, get a lawyer, and then get an emancipation. You're old enough.

At age 16 the person is still a minor, therefore, under the care and responsibility of their parents.
It would be extremely easy to find them because in order to get a job they would need to present their birth certificate and social security card, which would be traced by the law who would know she is missing.
Also, it is against the law to rent a room or apartment to a minor child without parental consent and the parent signing off on the contract with them.
So yes, they would find them, and if the parents don't feel they could control them they could be put in Juvenile Detention until they are 19, or could be allowed to be home, but wear a ankle bracelet that tracks them and makes sure they don't leave the house.
The streets of the cities are littered with these "run aways".
They live on the streets, begging for change.
The prostitute themselves, shoplift, and steal from people to survive.
Also, most get themselves into gangs and drugs.
Many don't live to see their 20th birthday, and if they do, they are so changed from life on the street they will never be a productive, responsible part of society.

A kid doesn't have to run away, a kid can move out and start divorce proceedings against their parents now a days.
However the kid needs to have a good reason they can't just leave because they don't like being told what to do.

A kid has it made if he has basically good parents, by that I mean that they support him as far as food, clothing, health care, you know all the junk a kid needs and no abuse.
A kid may even get their college paid for by these nasty parents so as long as they have a roof over their heads and all the junk they NEED not want then I say the kid should use their parents for all they can get before they move out.
Though hopefully that kid will realize someday that his parents weren't really so awful.

In Ohio you'd probably do two weeks in kiddy jail and yes they rape in there and get probation as well as possibly being sent to a county home for kids, no more parents.

The world is full of 16 year old runaways...some are never seen again, some end up as druggies, prostitutes, slaves, battered and beaten, homeless, etc etc. If one is lucky enough to have gone out of state and found a place to live and a job and a trustworthy roomy who pays the rent faithfully then that is "one in a million"
there are perverts, and predators out there forever watching for these runaways, and oh they seem sooo helpful and concerned at first...then when you find out what they really are it is waaay toooo late.
My advise....stay home, finish your education, get a job, then if you want, move out and have an old trusted friend as a roomy for a while...it works better that way. good luck

At 16 other than maybe your parents there is no one that will really look for you. 1.5 million teens run away EACH year in the US. Disease, hunger, rape, assault, etc. are some of the consequences. The police at most if you are caught committing a crime will ask you to call home to let them know you are OK and they will try to persuade you to return home or go to a runaway shelter.

Why would a 16 year old want to anyways. Life is hard enough for a mature person to deal with, never mind a young kid, with no life experiences. Better off finish the education, graduate, and start off your life the right, smart way..

Why run away? If things are so difficult to handle at home, it is far better for a young person to request a legal emancipation from his/her family. Go to legal aid and ask to speak with an attorney confidentially before you or a friend decide to do anything as desperate as what you are proposing.

It would be extremely unwise to run away at 16, if you have not even finished high school you are in an even worse situation, it would be very easy for the police to track you down, you might not end up in legal trouble though.

I believe that since they are a minor they will not have huge reporcussions. If they were doing drugs and similar things they could get sent to a reablition unit or Juvi...
As for the adult... they could be charged with kidnapping... i think. :)
The smart way to do it would be to apply to be declared indepent by the state.

by what i have learnt is that you can move out at 16 but live with someone else because now they don't get paid for you it also depends if you are going to continue school well in Australia any ways
