No, I think it misclassifies a lot of people. Don't worry, my husband is 6ft and 185lb. BMI has him as borderline overweight, but he only has about 10%-12% body fat and is very slim.

Find out your body fat and that will tell you whether you are healthy or not. For a guy, between 10%-20% body fat would be healthy.

The Body Mass Index is a ratio of your weight to your height squared. There are statistical standards that compare morbidity and mortality at different BMI's, and persons with higher BMI's have a statistically greater chance of having heart disease, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure and related conditions. People who are more obese have a greater chance at diabetes, degenerative joint disease and back problems.

There are always a minority "to the left of the curve" who have a higher than average BMI but escape the morbidity. Many of these individuals lucked out genetically.

At 5'9" your ideal weight should be around 155. My suggestion would be to get your cholesterol and other lipids measured, and get your percentage of body fat measured. If parents or first degree relatives have heart disease, exercise, eat healthy and lose 15 pounds.

I read from wikipedia that BMI is just a guide for sedentary people. It tells only whether these people are overweight, underweight or just nice. It is NOT a measure for health.

If you are doing weights, BMI is not accurate for you. I have an white American brother-in-law, he is 5'11, 190lbs. He has bulging arms muscles and he runs daily and eats healthily. He is definitely healthy and not overweight.

Do you know Asians has a different BMI score from the International BMI? We are rated a lower BMI score for the same height. According to the official guidelines, it is to account for the Asian's smaller frames.

Take a look at it. http://lclfhfhpasianbmi.blogspot.com

I am Asian BMI 21 and I am 49kg.
