God apparently told his people to go in and slaughter them. The ones they didn't kill they enslaved - all with God's approval - the God of love?

Ask a question, you are answered with yet another interpretation of the Christian bible. Dear heart, this particular god was the god of the invaders, the desert nomads who were doing the slaughtering, thus he steadfastly approved of their obscene deeds. The Canaanites inhabited territory which the invaders coveted, and their god, then, was on their side. They raped, tortured, murdered, stole, 'dashed' infants against handy walls, enslaved--as you say, 'all with god's approval.' God's will, somebody said here. Well, as far as I am concerned, this 'god' can take a flying leap, just stay away from me. This god of course was created by the very men who 'dashed' babies and raped and enslaved the survivors. Greed and barbarism are such ugly words, but appropriate, eh?

Partially true, Sarah:

But some people were not allowed to be enslaved and were completely eliminated, those who were servants were to be treated with compassion. But why did God destroy Canaan?

God told Abraham that it would be 400 years before the sins of the people would warrant their elimination (Genesis 15:14-16).

About 400 years later God tells Israel some things they must not do, including sexing animals or homosexuality. Then He says:

Leviticus 18:24 "Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you:
18:25 "And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants."

God will protect His universe from the contaminating effect of sin, and that will happen again. Judgment is certainly coming and a Bible code tells you when wickedness is eliminated in His galaxies and peace returns to heaven.

you could no longer. I actual have study the whole bible. The God of the OT is crammed with base human thoughts, like many mythological gods. he's jealous of alternative gods (even nonetheless curiously they do no longer exist, so why might he sense jealous over something that doesn't exist?) he's intentionally deceptive to his very own followers, tricking them. He gets so irrationally offended that he kills innocents along with his enemies (oftentimes his enemies are no longer hurting the Isrealites yet basically have components including land which they like). He choses one little tribe out of each and every of the international's to prefer, harming each and every of something as He pleases to guard them. he's sexist, and in accordance to the OT, he basically makes women folk barren and by no skill adult men. I fail to confirm what makes Him that diverse from many different gods, i.e. Zeus and so on., which even have thoughts written approximately them that have been believed for an prolonged time via many knowledgeable human beings. Even those Christians who say that the NT became right into a clean commence and the OT does not persist with to any extent further, would desire to settle for that it is the comparable God, that Jesus believed for the duration of this god and believed that the OT thoughts have been actual, as a result asserting it is symbolic skill you're no longer a Christian, yet basically somebody who nicely-knownshows those writings to now and returned be inspiring (the "sturdy" areas). you could no longer p.c.. and chosen which areas to have self belief, as a Christian.

God did love them. He gave them 400 years to change their wicked ways before He judged them worthy of death. (Genesis 15: 13-16)
The Canaanites would have wiped out the Israelites if God hadn't judged them, and God had promised to preserve the nation of Israel until the Messiah came.
Archeologists are even horrified and appalled, and say the Canaanites were very unbelievably wicked people, who thought nothing of killing babies and children for their gods. They have found way too much evidence of their sacrifices and evil ways.

His love has limits. The people of Canaan turned from God, worshipped idols, and performed depraved and murderous services for these idols. It's like when you execute criminals. We don't do it for retribution, we do it to protect the rest of society from their evil.

This was God's form of punishment to those that had not obeyed the one true God.

God loves everybody in that he sent his son to die for us.The people who accept this gift are loved by him for all eternity. The people who don't are his enemies and will be judged.Especially if they oppress God's people.

God's love is like the love a surgeon might have who had to amputate a gangrenous limb from one of his children. God was calling forth a people to Himself from whom He would announce the salvation through faith in Jesus Christ to the rest of the world. He knew that if they hung out with the pagans they would turn away from Him and worship other "gods" ie idols. It was a case of sacrificing guilty sinners for the greater good of mankind.

Besides all of that, God loves and shows mercy to those whom He as the sovereign Creator determines to love and show mercy to.

Romans 9:13 As it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." 14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God's part? By no means!

15 For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."

18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills. 19 You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?"

20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me like this?" 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honored use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory-- 24 even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles?
