I sell a car every month as I get bored driving the same car. I don't do it to make a profit but cos I sell so many cars how do I ensure I'm not classed as a dealer? is there a limit to the number of cars I can sell every year in the UK

I know that here in the States, if you sell more than 6 cars in one year you will need to buy a dealers license to sell more cars.

There's no limit, keep all the reciepts if anyone should ever ask.

Have you ever thought of leasing or using hire cars, if you regularly used a rental company such as enterprise it would not be too expensive and you could have a brand new car every week and change whenever you want! If you do make a profit from buying and selling from home, it's fine anyway, you just have to declare and pay some tax. Also the vehicles will have to be sold with warranty or return policy.

NO, you can legally sell as many as you like BUT you MUST conform to some legalities.

1. The V5 document MUST show ownership by you - so no 'not sending it off' to keep the number of owners down!
But if it's taxed, MOT'd & insured then it's yours.
Lots of 'private' sellers (especially on Ebay) are actually small time (illegal) dealers.
2. You local council MAY deem it 'trade' if you store vehicles on the street or your 'foot fall' exceeds certain limits...highly unlikely though.
3. The Inland Revenue MAY take an interest if (for instance) you are buying 'scrappers', fixing them up & selling for a profit as it'd be seen as an income.

The definition of a motor trader, is a person or persons actively operating a formal business on a full or part-time basis for profit, either selling vehicles (more than six sales in any 12 month period), or providing a service relating to repair or maintenance of motor vehicles.

if you buy and sell a certain number of cars (not sure of the actual number) per year, the DVLA and the tax man will be interested, as you will be classed as a trader.
if you need more infomation, go to www.eBay.co.uk >community > motors
there are many traders on there who will be happy to give you advice.
