On my way from New York to Helsinki, I have a tight connection at Keflavik Airport in Iceland (transfer time = 65 minutes only). Does anyone know if a transfer passenger arriving specifically in Keflavik can just go straight to the boarding gate of the next flight, or is the passenger required to pass through (1) security screening and/or (2) passport check first in Keflavik? Thanks a lot.

From my experience, there is a security check between the schengen section and the EU section of the terminal. So once you disembark off your NY flight, you will have to go through security check in order to enter the schengen departure area.

In fact, I flew to Iceland last February and you must go through that security check (X-Ray and Metal detector) to exit the non-schengen area, so even if you don't have a connecting flight and are staying in Iceland, you must go through that check to exit the airport.

Don't worry abnout time though, Keflavik is Icelandair's hub and is designed to make transfer as easy as possible. It will take 10-15 minutes max fom you arrival to the departure gate.

Keflavik airport is really small. I think 65 minutes is plenty of time to transfer between flights there. You probably have to go through a security check, but that goes fast in Keflavik, so no need to worry about that.

Enjoy your trip!

YOu do pass through passport control at Keflavik but you don't have to go through security. It's actually probably the best airport you can fly out of because it's very small and easy to get to your connecting gate. Also, Icelandair times all of their arriving flights from the US to arrive at approximately the same time, and all of their departing flights to mainland Europe to depart at about the same time. And most people who go to Keflavik Airport are changing planes, so they make it very easy. I just did it last year. It's probably the best way to get to Europe (unless you're going nonstop).

I never saw anyone sleeping at the airport when I was there. They have a FLYBUS service which leaves outside the terminal..your'll see departure times which coincide with arrivals displayed on monitors by the baggae reclaim..
