I did something similar when I quit. I would have a cigarette, then hold off as long as possible. Then, I would only smoke half of it, then wait as long as possible, then smoke the other half. I would smoke only half the cigarette and space out the times I went outside. I bought a pack on Monday. By Friday of that week, I was done. The post-smoking adjustment might take some gettig used to, though. I realized that I was a habit smoker, and that it wasn't so much for the nicotene. The Saturday, my first cigarette free day, after my morning coffee, I was a bit lost, but I got through it. Same with every time I left my building-- It was habitual for me to pull one out and light it up. However, after a week it got easier.
It's been two and a half years. I not only don't miss it, but literally can't breathe around smoke. Well, before my pregnancy I could just barely tolerate it. Now, I literally can't breathe. I think it's a natural protection instinct on my part.
I hope this helps.
