Because I heard that they check for contents such as downloaded multimedia and other softwares which were only obtained through downloading.. Can someone enlighten me about this or give me references on the net?

My laptop was checked extra thoroughly last month, just the more careful check they do at each tenth laptop coming past.
After going through the normal hand luggage scanner some of the dust on it was cleaned of and it was scanned again, looked at top, bottom and open.
But it was not switched on, nor did anybody ask any questions about the content.

If you are searched as if you are a (possible) terrorist or child abuser they will check for contains, as they might also do if you are searched for smuggling.
But unless you have terroristic information, porno with minors or loads and loads of downloads there should not be a problem.

Being searched as one of the above groups does not mean they see you as one, they also do random checks, a set number but there is a computer somewhere giving a beep and the next person in the queue get the search.

The questioner means the IPR and potential breaches of copyright ownership.
No, we check for Bombs.
Entering USA, they may check if all your software is legal, that you are not bringing in (Or taking out) any IPR (Intelectual property rights) related stuff, no ITAR stuff (International Traffic in Arms regs).
Makes things a damn sight harder when I'm taking engineering drawings to work on when I get there.
The Americans also check mem sticks (Pen drives) and have recently been checking people personal medi stuff (Because files can be put on the memory - not just music)

No, i dont think they do. You have to put it in the scanner thing when you walk through the metal detector. they might have a quick look if you are pulled over for a spontanous search.

Y wot you hiding??

They will put them through the x-ray scanners, and they sometimes swab them for explosives, but they don't turn them on and root through your files.
