Today, most people know all about sex.. they understand contraceptives so they don't need to fear unwanted pregnancies.. many also know how to protect themselves from disease. Famous, respected people live openly with one another without being married. Is there any reason to prohibit sex outside of marriage?

My own personal view on this issue is that.. sex outside of marriage exploits people.. it makes women feel used. If a man truly loves a woman, he will want to make her his wife.. he won't want to just use her body.

If sex is allowed outside marriage, why marry in the first place?
Aside from religion, marriage is a contract. If I have sex outside marriage, then I am not keeping my part of the contract, hence I am in preach of the law.
Also, marriage is one-on-one love. If I have sex outside marriage, then I have stopped loving my partner and should be honest and brave enough to admit it and get a divorce instead of "rewarding" the person whom I once loved dearly with heart burns and agony of jealousy that they do not deserve.
Marriage is children and family and upbringing, if I am having sex outside marriage then I cannot be a successful father or a respected family man whose children follow the suit of.
Marriage is a safeguard from diseases and illegal complications and possible crimes.
Marriage is a decision I have made. If I feel I had made the wrong decision, then I must be a man and get a divorce before cheating on my partner, otherwise I would be acting cowardly and loose self-respect.
Marriage is society organized. It is cooperation and sharing and accomplishing dreams together. If I find my pleasure outside that environment, then I am not the type who belongs to this tie, and must choose either or. To continue as is, will be the beginning of headaches and misery for all family members.
On the other hand, some couples have sex outside their bondage by mutual agreement. Even this, is not justified because their marriage in that case has defeated its purpose, and started to become a social cover for illegal acts by both.
If I loose interest in my wife, then there must be a reason or reasons that we, together, should sit down and discuss to solve, otherwise leave in peace.
Simply, there's nothing on this earth that can justify adultery.

Is this a religious or a non-religious question?
Since God created all things, including humans, he has the right to decide what is right and wrong, good and bad.
Sex was a gift to the married for their enjoyment and for procreation of children. Thus it is supposed to help glue together the husband and wife in an intimate relationship.
Hopefully, thereby providing children a stable platform to grow up in.
If you talk about today's society that more or less should be neutral as far as religions and non-religions go, such religious laws and restrictions is for any society to decide on.

reason for sex being prohibited outside marriage is because sex is for a certain reason and when it is done a married couple its through real love when its done outside marrieage it becomes a profession and the real value of sex is lost sex should be treated with respect otherwise we would not differ to the animal world

My dear sex is sweet but also quite dangerous despite its innocent appearance. If you can manage to control it there is a better chance of having a successful marriage in the end - without any recriminations. If you are intelligent and well adjusted you can get the best out of sex without it destroying you.
Peace and Good luck.

None that makes any sense. It's just that religion is afraid somewhere, somehow, someone is having fun, and feeling good about himself and not thinking about gods. They like to be in total control. Attaching guilt and "sin" to sex is their only defense. They know, deep down, they'll never be able to stop people from having sex. People who are relaxed and satisfied after some great sex are less inclined to get excited about Jesus, and boy, does that piss off preachers. If nothing else, it threatens their income, because folks are home lounging around in bed and not in church filling that collection plate.

It goes against our Creator's design for human sexual expression.
Matthew 19:4 He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh'? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."
