because they were forced into it growing up, hated it, and left when they left their parents house.

Some where forced to go to Church when they were young. May have been told confusing things about the teaching of Christ and his Church. The bad example many Christians have set. Maybe they just didn't like doing religious stuff. Christians preaching but not doing what they preached.
Maybe the atheist was not mature enough to see beyond the things mentioned above. Perhaps their parents or friends prejudiced their minds against Christ or the Church.

Because Christainity has been reduced to paganism by Saint Paul.If religion fails to lead to path of God it is no better than atheism.
