The U.K. and Ireland are what is known as the Common Passport Area. There are no passport requirements needed for citizens of these countries travelling from one to the other. It is advisable, however, to carry some for of identity with you. It can speed your way through any police or Customs checks you may encounter. You can imagine what it would be like to try and prove just who you are. There is no requirement for children to carry I.D.

Contact the ferry company.
I have been told that as an adult you need a photo ID, but no passports anymore.
Children mostly do not have photo ID's.
Worth checking.
