without anger please! i talked to a friend the otherday, he is a high ranking member of the military, not yet a general but soon to be, he said that the majority of soldiers are low lifes with no chance to become anything in the civilian world, i found this to be disturbing but if its coming from such a high ranking person, is it true? and do all officers think like this about the enlisted soldiers?

I was always under the impression that the military build character in its soldiers. If this high ranking member of the military thinks this way, he should be removed from his position and thrown back into civilian life. A person who does not respect the people he leads does not belong in a position of authority.

From a Military Wives point of view....My husband is in the Navy. I run the Family Readiness Group for my husband's submarine & have met a lot of the guys that serve on it. There are a fair share of guys that are there just for the benefits & have no pride for the uniform that they are wearing. And I think that's one reason why some Military end up getting so pissed off when they get deployment orders..... Because they didn't join to fight in the war, but to get College tuition & Medical coverage!! There are a lot of guys that joined for all the glory, but inside are still so immature that partying is still so important for them that they show up to work late & aren't focus on getting their day to day job done. And yes, I've known several that have been kicked out for getting too many DUI...& they were proud of it....& no..they probably WON'T make much of themselves when they first get out.
And there are "clans". Most Officers hang out with Officers, most Chiefs with Chiefs.
I know that my husband, who is the Chief of a "certain" division (being that it is submarine, I'm not allowed to go into too many details...look up OPSEC!!), & his division was having some problems with equipment. HE was having difficulties fixing things & his CO started yelling at him & asking what he was good for, what was the point of having him on the boat if he couldn't do his job.....! & then went complaining to the COB about him. Turns out, the problem was with the computer system itself on shore...& my husband would of never been able to do anything about it anyways. Within a couple days, he & the CO were on speaking & joking terms again.
So, maybe your friend was just having a bad day. Maybe you should wait a couple days & ask again. & if it really bothers you, you should tell him that it bothers you!
PS.....I have to remind my husband that he didn't get to where he is by being a "friend" to everyone that has worked under him & giving slack to those that just don't feel like working. Sometimes you have to be an a** to get people to do what you want them to do....to be an authoritative Chief to these guys. Maybe that's the case here.

The class difference in the military between officers and enlisted is a huge problem. In my experience a lot of officers believe they are better than enlisted. This is simply not true and is very infuriating. You can tell your friend that the people he LEADS are a reflection of him. If he is not raising up his enlisted people, then he is a shitty leader.

That point of view I am afraid it is not peculiar to US forces.I recall a Admiral in the Greek Navy to tell more of the less the same for the NCOs (in my country there is conscription and so we do not have professional soldiers in the ranks but conscripts and myself was one during the time of this conversation )

well statistics show that the people enlisting these days are from middle to upper middle class families. I think they may be referring to our personal lives, we love to party and have a good time. Excuse us for having fun, seeing how we ARE the Army.

No and no. Besides, it's a pretty crappy way to think of your employees. Imagine the reaction if a CEO said the same thing about his workers and they found out.

I have more than just serious doubts that your full of it. Nobody high ranking would ever make that statement in part, whole or otherwise, its fanciful thinking on your part.
PS. Then your friend is nothing more than a pompous a*s*s with an overinflated ego, and that's how that conversation should be taken.

Why would anyone who has something to do join the army? The army is normally for losers who dont have anything to do. However in a few cases people join the army for education bursaries.
